Early experiments with electrified roadways have been conducted in some states and countries, yet most were initially conceived with passenger cars in mind. Commercial trucks, however, operate under a different scale. They require more energy, traverse long distances, and function within tight delivery windows. Conventional charging stations strain under these realities.

A new approach has emerged to answer those constraints. Researchers at Purdue University, in partnership with Cummins and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), have designed a dynamic charging system for heavy-duty trucks.

Embedded transmitter coils beneath the concrete pavement generate magnetic fields that stream power directly into vehicles traveling at highway speeds. The process is similar to a smartphone charging on a wireless pad, scaled to industrial proportions. Cummins contributed a Class 8 battery-electric truck to integrate with this energized roadway.

In fact, the National Sleep Foundation reports that nearly 90% of adults avoid driving after drinking, but only half avoid driving when they’re drowsy.

Now in its 18th year, Drowsy Driving Prevention Week aims to raise awareness about the dangers of fatigue behind the wheel. The campaign’s theme, “Sleep First. Drive Second.”, reinforces a simple but critical message — drowsy driving is impaired driving, just like driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, drowsy driving continues to be a serious public health concern. Their recent five-year study (2017–2021) found that:

Empire Group Hosts 30th Annual Golf Classic

On behalf of the Empire Group , we would like to offer our sincere thanks to everyone who participated in our Annual Golf Classic on October 4 ^th at the beautiful Galen Hall Golf Club in Wernersville, PA. It’s hard to believe this marked the 30th year of the tournament!

Although this was Empire Group's first time hosting the event at this historic venue, they have deep roots at Galen Hall — affiliate, Empire Services , demolished the original Galen Hall Hotel back in 1963 following a devastating fire. Since then, the golf club has remained a local landmark, known for its scenic views and welcoming atmosphere.

Despite the cool early morning, 99 golfers were warmed up and ready for the 8 AM shot gun start leading to some fun but competitive golfing. After the final putt dropped, everyone gathered for the award ceremonies, followed by a hearty lunch. Shout out to the winners of all categories and the raffle!

When severe weather strikes, one of the most underestimated hazards on the road is flood water, and for truck drivers, the danger can be even greater. Whether you're behind the wheel of a tri-axle dump truck, a flatbed, or a semi, driving through flood-affected areas poses serious safety risks that can lead to costly damage, delays, or worse—life-threatening situations.

"Turn Around, Don't Drown" Isn’t Just a Slogan—It’s a Lifesaving Rule

According to the National Weather Service, flooding is the second-deadliest weather hazard in the U.S. Many drivers assume that large trucks are heavy and powerful enough to push through rising water. But the reality is that just six inches of fast-moving water can knock over an adult. Twelve inches of rushing water can carry away cars. And two feet of water can carry away SUVs and trucks, including heavy-duty trucks.

Flood waters often hide hazards like debris, sink holes, washed-out roadways, or downed power lines—none of which are visible from behind the wheel. Even if the water looks shallow, it may be deeper than it appears or moving faster than expected.

What to Do If You Encounter Flooded Roads

If you encounter a flooded road, do not attempt to drive through it. If you're unsure about the depth (a half-inch deep or more), turn around. The water is usually shallower in the center of the road, so try to drive in the middle of it.

If you are not familiar with the area, use your GPS or DOT updates to reroute around the flooded area. You should also report the dangerous conditions to your dispatch and/or emergency services so others can avoid the same risk. And no matter the weather, you should always keep emergency supplies in your cab, including a flashlight, blanket, gloves, first aid kit, water, a snack, and a battery-powered radio.

Historic Building Demolition on Penn Street

Downtown Reading has seen a lot of change over the years—and DVC is honored to be part of the transformation. Recently, we partnered with Empire Services to support the demolition of two buildings on Penn Street that were deemed imminent threats to public safety.

One of these structures held a special piece of local history. It featured a façade from the original Reading News Building, a wonderful example of Reading’s architectural heritage dating back to 1912. Our experienced drivers navigated the tight turns of a narrow side street, expertly backing our barrel trailer into position. From there, we hauled mixed debris—concrete, glass, and brick—to a local disposal facility. We also provided a flatbed to haul equipment to and from our yard.

From Iconic Pool to Community Space

DVC was called in to help with the demolition of a neighborhood pool in East Reading. This wasn’t just any pool—it was featured in the 1970 film Rabbit, Run , based on the novel by Berks County’s own John Updike. As the site transforms to meet today’s community needs—with new parking and an exciting splash pad—DVC ensured the job was done safely and efficiently. Our tri-axle dump truck made its way through the old pool entrance to haul away debris from both the pool and surrounding structures.

Make-A-Wish Mother's Day Truck Convoy

It wasn’t all demolition and hauling this month—we also got to hit the road for a great cause! DVC proudly participated in the 36th Annual Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy in Manheim, PA.

Two of our team’s finest—Erich Roush in a brand-new 2025 Kenworth Tractor and Stew Rivers behind the wheel of a classic 1972 Mack—joined 424 other trucks for a day of smiles, honks, and community spirit. With over 2,500 attendees at the Family Fest, our drivers had an amazing time and are already looking forward to next year’s convoy.

How Are Driverless Trucks Affecting the Trucking Industry?

The trucking industry is on the verge of a technological revolution, and at the forefront of this transformation are driverless or autonomous trucks. As advancements in autonomous vehicle technology accelerate, the concept of self-driving trucks is quickly shifting from futuristic novelty to practical reality.

With rising operational costs, driver shortages, and increasing demand for faster deliveries, many logistics companies are exploring autonomous trucking as a scalable solution. But what does this mean for freight transportation?

What Are Driverless Trucks?

Driverless trucks, also known as autonomous trucks, are commercial vehicles equipped with advanced systems that allow them to operate without human input. These systems combine technologies like:

Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging)
Radar sensors
Cameras
Artificial intelligence (AI)
Machine learning algorithms
Real-time GPS and mapping systems

There are different levels of autonomous driving. According to SAE international’s standard J3016, there are five levels:

Level 0 = Truck driver has complete control of the truck, but there are driver-assisted technologies (e.g., automatic emergency braking and cruise control) available.

Level 1 = The driving system can control speed and direction but not both simultaneously. The driver-assisted features are more advanced (e.g., lane-keeping assistance).

Level 2 = Control of speed and direction can be done simultaneously. These trucks still require driver input since the system is not ready yet for real-world driving conditions.

Level 3 = The driving system is more autonomous, and it can request the driver to take over to drive.

Level 4 = The driving system is fully autonomous, and some Level 4 trucks may not have pedals or steering wheels.

Many driverless trucks on the road today operate at Level 4 autonomy, meaning they can handle all driving tasks under certain conditions without human intervention, but may still have a driver onboard as an observer (a safety backup).

Autonomous Trucks in the Trucking Industry

Here’s why driverless trucks are gaining traction in logistics and freight:

1. Alleviating the Driver Shortage

According to the American Trucking Association, the U.S. still faces a shortage of over 80,000 truck drivers in recent years, and could double by 2030. Autonomous trucks provide a scalable way to move freight without relying solely on a shrinking labor pool.

2. Boosting Efficiency and Uptime

Unlike human drivers, autonomous trucks don’t need to rest, take breaks, or stop overnight allowing for nearly 24/7 operation. This translates to faster delivery times and reduced downtime.

3. Lowering Operational Costs

While the upfront investment is significant, driverless trucks offer long-term savings by reducing labor costs, fuel usage through optimized driving, and accident-related expenses.

4. Improved Safety

AI-powered trucks are programmed to follow traffic laws precisely, maintain safe distances, and avoid distracted or fatigued driving.

Autonomous trucks can be integrated with electric drivetrains and optimized routing to reduce carbon emissions, helping companies meet sustainability targets.

Challenges and Considerations

While promising, driverless trucking isn't without its hurdles:

Regulatory uncertainty : Federal and state laws are still evolving around autonomous vehicles. There is no federal standard yet, only at the state level. Twenty-four states have permitted some degree of autonomous commercial trucks.
Infrastructure readiness : Roads, signals, and logistics hubs may require upgrades. Also, a person could tamper with road signs or painted lines on roads to mislead the driving system.
Cybersecurity concerns : More connectivity means higher vulnerability to digital threats. Autonomous tractor-trailers can be activated wirelessly, which has been proven by engineers at the National Motor Freight Traffic Association . Along with cybersecurity concerns, there are other security issues, such as a person tampering with a vehicle’s CAN (Controlled Area Network) bus or hardware.
Public perception : Gaining trust in autonomous technology is still a work in progress.

However, with continued investment and testing, these challenges are being actively addressed by the industry.

Driverless trucks are not a distant dream—they are a real and growing presence in the transportation ecosystem. While full adoption may take time, the trucking industry is clearly steering toward an autonomous future.

A Windy Touch-a-Truck

It was a busy and windy day for The Junior League of Reading’s 18th Annual Touch-a-Truck event on Sunday, April 27th. There was so much to see with over 50 businesses, organizations, and non-profits at the event, which was held at the FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, PA. There were over 1,000 attendees and a variety of vehicles. This year, we brought a DVC tri-axle dump truck for eager children to explore. The DVC team was excited to meet the families and to provide information about the trucks and also DVC and the Empire Group.

DVC’s table was set up at the start of the vehicles area. We were kept on our toes helping kids of all ages into our truck. By walking around the event, it was clear that there were more exhibitors than previous years. The kids loved learning about the different vehicles and collecting giveaways. The DVC team handed out foam baseball mitts and baseball bats (while trying to keep them from blowing away!) to the kids as they waited in line to see the truck. The vendors provided fun samples and educated families on their services, along with those whom were selling their goods.

From a horse trailer to a propane truck, there was no shortage of excitement for children to experience. There was also a train ride for the little ones and Phunland with mini golf putting. Behind the scenes, The Junior League of Reading orchestrated the event flawlessly, which benefits Women’s Leadership and Youth Empowerment initiatives.

DVC extends heartfelt gratitude to the Junior League for their unwavering commitment and the opportunity to be part of such a remarkable event. With anticipation building for next year's gathering, the team eagerly looks forward to creating more lasting memories and fostering connections within the vibrant Reading community.

Why Are So Many Trucks Parked on the Shoulder?

You’ve probably seen it: tractor-trailers lined up along highway shoulders, parked on vacant lots, or squeezed into abandoned properties. At first glance, it may seem like drivers are simply being careless or choosing not to park in designated areas. But the truth is far more complex—and concerning. There is a serious shortage of public parking spaces for trucks. And what used to be a logistical inconvenience has escalated into a nationwide transportation crisis.

A Growing Problem: The Truck Parking Shortage Explained

The shortage of safe, legal truck parking is a result of multiple overlapping issues:

1. Freight Demand Is Booming

Today, the U.S. moves 12 billion tons of freight annually, with truck drivers covering over 320 million miles to get it delivered. And it's only increasing. According to Dennis Dellinger , President and CEO of Cargo Transporters, Inc., the trucking industry is expected to haul an additional 2.7 billion tons of freight in the next decade. More freight means more trucks—and more trucks need more parking.

2. Less Land, Fewer Spaces

As industrial zones shrink and land gets repurposed for residential and commercial development, existing truck parking lots are disappearing. Municipal zoning laws also restrict where trucks can legally park, especially within city limits.

3. Infrastructure Funding Falls Short

Despite growing demand, public funding for truck parking infrastructure remains inadequate. Most available funds are directed toward road repairs and route optimization—not expanding or improving parking facilities. Lawmakers must come together to come up with solutions to this growing problem. A few years ago, key players in the trucking industry testified before the U.S. Senate Transportation and Infrastructure subcommittee on this issue. While the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act will allocate funds to create safe parking spaces, more still needs to be done to truly solve the issue.

4. Hours-of-Service Laws Leave Little Room for Error

Federal regulations require truck drivers to rest for 10 hours after 11 hours on the road. But when parking is scarce, drivers spend valuable time searching for a safe spot—cutting into their drive time, productivity, and pay.

The Real-World Impact of Limited Truck Parking

The lack of designated parking spaces has consequences.

1. Driver Safety and Fatigue

With no legal parking available, truckers are often forced to park in unsafe or unauthorized locations. This puts both the driver and the public at risk. Fatigue caused by lack of proper rest is a major contributor to road accidents involving commercial vehicles.

2. Delays in the Supply Chain

The time drivers spend circling for parking adds up—causing delays that ripple through supply chains. Retail stores, warehouses, and job sites all feel the impact.

3. Lost Income and Rising Costs

According to the American Transportation Research Institute, truck drivers lose thousands of dollars each year in wages while searching for parking. These inefficiencies also increase operating costs for carriers and shippers.

This crisis reveals a critical gap in our infrastructure—one that fails to support the growing demands of modern freight. Truck drivers, who power nearly every industry, are being left without one of their most basic needs: safe, reliable parking. While the issue is gaining attention, meaningful action is still needed to keep goods moving and our roads safe. The time to act is now.

What Are Smart Tires?

Bottlenecks in road transportation are a common challenge that businesses and commuters face on a daily basis. And truck speeds continue to decline as bottlenecks across the country increase. The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) revealed in its annual freight bottleneck survey the average truck speed at 66 of the top 100 bottlenecks is below 45 mph. But what causes bottlenecks? Let’s take a look at the top five causes of this infuriating road transportation issue.

1. High Traffic Volume

The most obvious and frequent cause of road transportation bottlenecks is simply too many vehicles on the road. It’s hard to believe it’s the end of 2024! We are grateful for another great year. There have been many projects and events DVC was involved in, and we are proud of the services we have provided to our customers. Below are some project and event highlights from this year.

Transporting and Disposing C & D Debris

We assisted Empire Services, an Empire Group affiliate, on a residential demolition in Quakertown, PA. The project included an 18th-century farmhouse and a banked barn, which was located on a busy road with only one way in and out of the site. Our barrel trailer was loaded up with debris from the house and barn to be transported to a landfill.

A Rescheduled National Night Out

We had a great time at National Night Out at the Berks County Fairgrounds! Despite the rescheduled date, the event did not disappoint with great food, fun games and cool giveaways.

DVC Wins Walker Category

On the chilly evening of Saturday, October 26th, the streets of downtown Hamburg, PA, came alive with the King Frost Parade , an annual tradition that has been captivating locals for over sixty years. DVC had a great time and won first place in the Walkers Category.

A big thank you to Dominick Wentzel, Terry Wentzel and family, Stew Rivers, Nick Olivieri, and Jason Moffett. We can’t wait for next year’s parade!

5 Essential Winter Driving Tips for Truck Drivers

Winter weather can be unpredictable, with rapid temperature changes, ice storms, and even thundersnow becoming more common in recent years. While we can’t control the weather, we can control how prepared we are to handle it. Whether you're navigating through snow, ice, or rain, being ready for winter driving is key to staying safe on the road. The winter months, from December through February, often bring a mix of weather conditions, from heavy snow to freezing rain and hail. So, it's crucial to not only prepare your truck for winter conditions but also to adjust your driving habits. Here are five critical winter driving tips every truck driver should know:

1. Maintain Extra Space Between Vehicles

Winter weather means slower stopping times. One of the most important safety tips is to increase the distance between your truck and the vehicle in front of you. In normal conditions, the rule of thumb is one second for every 10 feet of vehicle length. However, in winter weather, increase that to:

Three seconds for speeds under 40 mph
Six seconds for speeds over 40 mph

This extra space will give you more time to react in case of sudden stops or slippery conditions.

2. Pack Essential Winter Supplies

If you get stuck in a snowstorm or find yourself waiting for an accident to clear, having the right supplies (winter kit) can make a big difference. Here’s a checklist of items to carry in your winter kit:

Flashlight and extra batteries
Blanket and extra clothes (including gloves)
Bag of salt or sand for traction
Tire chains
Non-perishable snacks
Jumper cables
Snow scraper and brush
Flares and warning triangles
Windshield washer fluid
Rain gear (just in case)
Portable radio and spare batteries
Portable charger for your cell phone

These items will help you stay safe and comfortable, especially if you're stranded or stuck in inclement weather.

3. Be Cautious of Black Ice

Black ice is one of the most dangerous winter driving hazards. It’s a thin layer of ice that forms on the road from a light freezing rain or the melting of snow that re-freezes. It can form without bubbles and appears wet. You’ll find it mostly at night or early in the morning when temperatures are at their lowest, especially on bridges, overpasses and roads beneath overpasses. It's hard to spot, but there are a few signs to look for:

Watch how other drivers are reacting —slower speeds, skidding and sudden stops can indicate black ice ahead.

No water spray —There is no water spray on a road that looks wet.

If you do encounter black ice, try to keep calm to not overreact. Keep the steering straight and do as little as possible to glide over the ice. If the front end of your truck starts to slide, steer in the opposite direction of the skid. However, if the back end starts to slide, steer in the same direction.

Do not slam on the brakes and slow down by de-accelerating. Also, shifting into a lower gear will help give you more control on the ice. Always stay alert for this invisible danger and adjust your speed accordingly.

4. Slow Down in All Weather Conditions

While it's common sense to slow down during snowstorms, it's also crucial to drive slower during rain, fog, or any other weather event that reduces visibility. Driving at a slower speed:

Gives you more time to react to hazards
Reduces the risk of hydroplaning on wet roads
Helps maintain control if the road is slippery

In fact, did you know that drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol? According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety , over 300,000 car accidents, more than 100,000 injuries, and over 6,400 fatalities occur each year due to drowsy driving. That’s a shocking number, and it’s a danger that can be easily avoided with a little awareness and precaution.

Just like alcohol, fatigue impairs your ability to make sound decisions while behind the wheel. DVC Wins at the King Frost Parade

On the chilly evening of Saturday, October 26th, the streets of downtown Hamburg, PA, came alive with the King Frost Parade, an annual tradition that has been captivating locals for over sixty years. With around 20,000 spectators in attendance, this event is more than just a parade—it's a celebration of community and the arrival of fall.

This year's parade featured an impressive lineup of three vehicles from Delaware Valley Contractors (DVC), alongside a mini-excavator and a tractor from Elk Environmental Services. The star of the show was King Frost himself, who was joined by the Phillie Phanatic.

The parade boasted five divisions, showcasing 130 floats and five marching bands, all weaving through the heart of Hamburg. Our DVC service truck, adorned with cobwebs, balloons, and chains, led the way, with Terry Wentzel at the wheel. The highlight of our float was “Mr. Skellington,” a half-skeleton perched on the roof, making his debut in style.

Following closely was the DVC roll-off truck, carrying a mini-excavator that featured mischievous skeletons, driven by Stew Rivers. Nick Olivieri took charge of the Elk tractor, while another DVC service truck, driven by Jason Moffett, rounded out our parade presence. Our walkers, dressed in costumes ranging from Captain Marvel to a skeleton princess, won first place in the Walkers Category! Congratulations! They spread joy by handing out candy to the excited crowd. We had a blast this year and can’t wait until next year's parade!

It was a special year for Northern Berk County National Night Out! The event was held at a new venue – the Berks County Fairgrounds in Leesport. Each vendor had plenty of space for their vehicles and tables, a welcome change from last year's crowded setup at Schuylkill Valley High School.

A New Gathering

It was exciting to see employees from DVC, Empire Group, and Berks Transfer all together at the event. DVC's Russ Oswalt and Jimmy Blatt, along with Empire Group’s Ellen Ganime and Berks Transfer’s Karen O'Neill, Lauren Bohning, and Mitzi Cote, distributed fun giveaways, including police SUV stress relievers, small toys, bracelets, sunglasses, and snacks. Despite the cloudy weather and a rescheduled date, everyone had a great time.

National Night Out: A Nationwide Celebration

National Night Out takes place on the first Tuesday of August in most states, with some opting for an October date. Founded in 1984 by Matt Peskin, who also established the National Association of Town Watch, this event has grown significantly over the past 40 years. It fosters connections between police departments and communities through activities, music, and food. Last year, nearly 40 million people attended National Night Out events across over 16,800 communities from all 50 states.

An Exciting Vendor Lineup

The Berks County Fairgrounds showcased 80 vendors this year, and we anticipate even more participation next year. Empire Group was proud to be among a diverse group of vendors, including local businesses, first responders, and non-profit organizations. The variety was impressive, featuring everything from insurance companies to car dealerships, and healthcare providers to restaurants. New vendors like Spitler’s Towing, HNL Lab Medicine, and Blinds To Go added to the fun atmosphere. Attendees enjoyed delicious food options, from pizza to popcorn, while engaging in games and exploring a variety of vehicles, including a Tesla Cybertruck and two helicopters.

A Spectacular Ending

DVC showcased their tri-axle dump truck, while Berks Transfer displayed their roll-off truck with a dumpster. The evening concluded with brilliant fireworks, leaving everyone in high spirits.

At Empire Group, we search for ways to enrich our community. Like National Night Out, we strive to connect with our neighbors. Our employees had a blast at the event and look forward to National Night Out 2025. We hope to see you next year!

A Rainy End to the Annual Empire Group Golf Classic

The Annual Empire Group Golf Classic was held on September 7, 2024, at Willow Hollow Golf Course in Leesport, PA. It was a cool start, and we had 104 of the finest golfers from Berks County playing in this fun event. There was a shot gun start at 7:00 AM and all the action was completed by 11:30 AM – just in time for the rain! Once the match was over, we enjoyed a wonderful lunch of fried chicken, cold cuts, pierogies, baked beans, potato salad and various side dishes, snacks and drinks. After the luncheon, the following winners were announced:

First Place: Val Santo, Ray Plummer, Dave Albright, and Mike Wagner with a score of 17 under par – an excellent score!

Second Place: Jey Newswanger, Matt Gordon, Brian Leupold, and Nick Shade. The team had a score of 12 under par – an awesome score!

Third Place: Carl Sottosanti, John Sottosanti, Sebastian Sottosanti, and Giuseppe Napoli with a score of 11 under par – great playing guys!

As summer winds down, we look forward the upcoming Labor Day weekend. This special holiday honors the dedication of workers across various professions—from nurses and teachers to truck drivers and factory workers—by giving them a well-deserved day off. But the celebrations don’t end there! September continues with National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, recognizing the vital role truck drivers play in our lives. Labor Day also marks the unofficial end of summer, a perfect opportunity for one last cookout or picnic. But how did this holiday come to be? Here are some fun facts about Labor Day!

1. The Founders of Labor Day
Labor Day’s creation is attributed to two key figures: Matthew Maguire and Peter McGuire. Matthew was a machinist and member of the International Association of Machinists, while Peter was a carpenter and a member of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. Their contributions laid the groundwork for this important holiday.

2. The First Labor Day Celebration
The inaugural Labor Day took place on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. The city’s unions organized a parade to celebrate their members, which drew 20,000 attendees. Workers who wanted to attend the parade had to take a day off from work without pay!

3. Presidential Endorsement
Just as two workers were credited with creation of Labor Day, two U.S. presidents played roles in establishing Labor Day as an official holiday. President Grover Cleveland made it a federal holiday in 1894. Later, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill into law in 1968, ensuring that Labor Day would always fall on a Monday, thus creating a guaranteed three-day weekend for workers.

4. Hot Dog Season Finale
Labor Day not only signals the unofficial end of summer but also the close of hot dog season. Americans consume 7 billion (yes, billion) hot dogs between Memorial Day and Labor Day each year!

5. Labor Day & the U.S. Department of Labor
Interestingly, Labor Day was established two decades before the creation of the U.S. Department of Labor.

6. Labor Day & Hurricanes

Labor Day occurs in the middle of hurricane season. There have been some powerful hurricanes on the holiday. One of them was the Great Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 that hit the Florida Keys. It was the first recorded Category 5 hurricane to make landfall in the United States.

Rescheduling Marijuana: Implications for Safety-Sensitive Industries

Understanding the Proposed Rescheduling

Currently, marijuana is a Schedule I substance, which has no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. However, the DEA’s proposal aims to reclassify it as a Schedule III drug. Schedule III substances have accepted medical uses and a lower potential for abuse compared to Schedule I and II drugs. It will be legal to prescribe marijuana if this change takes place.

Concerns for Safety-Sensitive Industries

The proposed rescheduling has raised significant concerns among industries that rely on safety-sensitive workers. Safety-sensitive workers include individuals whose job performance directly impacts the safety of others, such as pilots, train operators, and truck drivers.

In particular, the trucking industry is worried about the potential implications of this change. Currently, truck drivers who test positive for marijuana can be disqualified from driving and need to complete the return-to-duty protocol to get back behind the wheel.

As a result of the proposed rescheduling, marijuana could be prescribed legally as a legitimate medical treatment, which could lead to limitations in drug testing protocols, potentially increasing the risk of impaired driving on the roads. The trucking industry fears the relaxation of regulations could compromise safety and endanger drivers and other road users.

What This Means Moving Forward

The DEA's proposal to reschedule marijuana represents a significant policy shift based on changing attitudes toward its medical use. However, it also highlights the need to study its impact on safety-sensitive industries (i.e., trucking). If marijuana becomes a Schedule III drug, it will put employers in a precarious position. The Top Three Causes of Poor Visibility

In the hustle and bustle of today’s highways, truck drivers shoulder a significant responsibility. Beyond simply moving from point A to point B, they must navigate a complex landscape fraught with challenges. For example, a truck driver not only has to keep a keen eye on the stretch of road ahead but also be acutely aware of what is on either side and what is behind. Every turn of the wheel demands attention to details like traffic flow, upcoming exits, and the ever-changing signals of stop lights. Yet, even with this constant vigilance, there’s a persistent issue that shadows every journey: visibility.

An Issue that Affects Everyone

Visibility a critical concern that affects not just the truck driver but also every vehicle sharing the road. There many causes and the consequences profound, creating a hazardous environment where split-second decisions can mean the difference between safety and disaster. Let’s take a look at the top three causes.

Blind Spots

There are also rear blind spots, which are directly behind the truck spanning up to 200 feet. Vehicles behind the truck can be hidden in them as well. A car following too closely cannot be seen, which is dangerous if the truck must stop suddenly. Additional mirrors and technology, such as blind spot detection systems and reversing cameras, help trucks drivers to improve their awareness of their surroundings.

Adverse Weather Conditions

Spring: This is the season of heavy rain, wind and thunderstorms. Rain accumulating on windshields coupled with water spray limits visibility. Rain can also blur the vision of truck drivers as well as disorient them due to the reflection from headlights, signs, and traffic lights.

Summer: Storms and flooding can appear quickly and be severe. In the past ten years, there has been a sharp increase in storms throughout the country. These storms produce heavy rains, flooding, hail and wind. Again, rain can accumulate quickly on surfaces (and windshields) reducing visibility. Flooding can make it difficult to distinguish the road from the environment or objects and other vehicles hidden in the water. Sun glare also reduces visibility.

Fall: Fog is no stranger to fall, such as on a chilly morning. Frost begins to show and can cause a visibility issue if it is not properly cleared off the windshield.

Reflection from surfaces should also be noted. Wet roads, snow, and vehicles can reflect light (sunlight and metallic glares) into truck drivers’ eyes reducing visibility and reaction times.

Driving at Night

While glare from sunlight can be a problem, glare from oncoming traffic can be just as bad. Newer headlights produce high-intensity discharge ( HID or LED ), which can momentarily blind a driver.

Truck drivers face a variety of daily trials and triumphs. It’s vital that truck drivers know what can impact their visibility to help reduce accidents. Blind spots, adverse weather conditions, and driving at night are just a few causes of this persistent issue. By understanding them and applying best driving practices, truck drivers can safely navigate our highways.

When we think of tornadoes, we often associate them with the Midwest. However, tornado activity has increased in the Northeast, especially in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. With over 1,200 tornadoes occurring annually in the United States, it's crucial to understand their causes, impacts, and safety precautions, especially as we enter tornado season from May to July.

What Causes a Tornado?

A tornado is a rotating column of air that forms when warm, moist air near the ground interacts with cool, dry air aloft, coupled with wind shear. This instability creates the perfect conditions for a tornado to develop. It's important to note that all thunderstorms have the potential to spawn tornadoes. Tornadoes can manifest rapidly, with warning signs including a greenish sky, a distinct roaring sound, and debris falling from the sky.

Tornadoes in the Northeast

Tornadoes have been documented in the United States since the 1950s, with Pennsylvania experiencing at least one tornado in every county since then. Recent data shows an alarming increase in tornado frequency, with notable instances like the EF-5 tornado in May 1985. Recently, a tornado hit Mahanoy City, PA. It was the first one of the year in this part of the state. Similarly, New Jersey has seen a surge in tornado activity, with 48 tornadoes reported in the past five years alone. Factors like warmer weather interacting with cool air masses have contributed to a 600 percent increase in tornado occurrence across the Delaware Valley in the past five years.

Safety Measures During a Tornado

Whether you're at home, on the road, or at work, it's crucial to prioritize safety during a tornado . Seek shelter immediately by moving to the lowest level of a sturdy building and away from windows. If a basement or storm cellar isn't available, find refuge in the center of a small interior room on the lowest floor, such as a closet or hallway. In the event of a tornado while driving, avoid seeking shelter under bridges or overpasses; instead, drive to a low, flat location and park safely. If caught in a vehicle during a tornado, stay inside with your seatbelt on and cover your head with your arms or a coat.

Bring on the Trucks!

It was a busy and cold day for the 17th Annual Touch-a-Truck event on Sunday, April 21st. As the vehicles arrived, the excitement for the day was brewing. There was so much to see with 27 businesses who brought vehicle exhibits and 20 businesses as vendors at the event, which was held at the FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, PA. There were 2,000 attendees, making it the biggest Touch-a-Truck ever! This year, we had two vehicles from the Empire Group at the event. Jimmy Blatt brought a DVC tri-axle dump truck and Eric Roush brought an Empire Services’ day cab for eager children to explore. As we set up our table, it was great to see old friends as well as meet new ones. The DVC team was excited to meet the families and to provide information about the trucks, DVC, and the Empire Group .

DVC’s table was set up at the start of the vehicles area between Redner’s Markets and The Junkluggers. We were kept on our toes not only to help the kids into the vehicles but also to stay warm! By walking around the event, it was clear that there were more exhibitors and families this year. The kids loved learning about the different vehicles and collecting giveaways. The DVC team handed out safety stress relievers and baseball piggy banks to the kids as they waited in line to see the trucks. The baseball piggy banks flew off the table and were gone by 12:30 PM! The vendors provided samples and educated families on their services, along with those selling their goods.

From towering construction vehicles (i.e. the crane) to the reassuring presence of Reading Police vehicles, there was no shortage of excitement for children to experience. Behind the scenes, the Junior League of Reading orchestrated the event flawlessly, their dedication ensuring its success and enabling the continuation of vital youth programs in the community.

But what exactly does this program entail, and what implications does it hold for the trucking industry?

At its core, the SuperTruck Program is a visionary endeavor aimed at reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency within the trucking sector. By fostering collaboration between the government and truck manufacturers, it seeks to drive innovation and accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge technologies that can revolutionize freight transportation.

Groundbreaking Advancements

Since its inception, the program has developed groundbreaking advancements in truck design and engineering. Through rigorous testing and experimentation, participating manufacturers have developed prototypes equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, ranging from advanced aerodynamics to hybrid powertrains. There are three SuperTruck programs :

SuperTruck 1 (2009) – Enabled engineering groups from various manufacturers of Class 8 trucks to come together to analyze a tractor trailer from headlights to taillights to determine how to get the most efficiency out of the vehicle.

SuperTruck 2 (2016) – Developed technologies that were able to be commercialized. This program produced some remarkable achievements. Volvo, Daimler Truck North America, Cummins/Peterbilt, and Navistar had exceeded the previous programs goals. For example, Daimler Truck North America achieved a 12% improvement in tractor dynamics and a 55.7% engine efficiency by incorporating several technologies developed by this program.

SuperTruck 3 (2021) – The current session focuses on reducing carbon emissions on trucks and cars. The goals are to electrify medium- and heavy-duty trucks, boost vehicle efficiency and expand electric vehicle infrastructure.

A Beacon of Hope

But what does all this mean for the trucking industry? For starters, the SuperTruck Program represents a beacon of hope for reducing the environmental footprint of freight transportation. As one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, the trucking industry has long been under pressure to adopt greener practices. The SuperTruck Program offers a pathway to achieving this goal by incentivizing the development of cleaner, more efficient vehicles.

Moreover, the innovations born out of the program have the potential to deliver substantial cost savings for trucking companies. By enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing operating expenses, SuperTrucks can help businesses bolster their bottom line while simultaneously reducing their carbon footprint.

Are You Ready for Pothole Season?

We see them every day, and sometimes we avoid them. Then, there are times when we hit them and suffer the consequences. What are they? Potholes. These ubiquitous craters appear on our roads, silently wreaking havoc on our vehicles and on our nerves. We might overlook them in our rush, but their impact is unmistakable.

Many attribute the creation of potholes to the aftermath of winter storms, with salt indiscriminately spread across roads, corroding weak spots in the pavement. While this is indeed a contributing factor, the truth behind pothole formation runs deeper, quite literally. Potholes are born from water getting under pavement. It begins with groundwater seeping beneath the surface, gradually permeating the pavement above. As temperatures plummet, this water freezes, expanding and exerting pressure on the pavement above. The result? Cracks form, weaknesses emerge, making the road ready for pothole proliferation.

With the thawing of ice, the pavement contracts, leaving cavities beneath the surface—a breeding ground for trouble. Enter the freeze-thaw cycle. Each cycle exacerbates the damage, inching us closer to the dreaded pothole. And yet, we cannot lay the blame solely on the freezing temperatures. Our vehicles play their part in the pothole saga. With each pass over weakened pavement, the chasms deepen, increasing the chances of vehicles experiencing the dreaded “thunk.” Vehicle damage can range from punctured tires to underbody damage (e.g., suspension system and axles).

However, where there are potholes, there are also heroes: the road crews tasked with taming these asphalt troublemakers. The repairs occur in the late winer/ early spring, where temperatures stay above freezing. This year, PennDOT will dispatch crews at the end of February to fight potholes on 40 state highways in southeast Pennsylvania. The counties that will receive the repair crews are Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia. Please be on the lookout for these crews and slowdowns in work zones. Also, be ready for intermittent lane closures!

A bittersweet victory awaits, for while repairs bring temporary respite, the cycle of destruction remains an ever-present specter. We would rather have potholes (or the whole road) repaired than avoid them on the road. Yet, we must be extra patient this time of year. And, as always, please be careful in the work zones!

Daylight Savings Time Can Be Hard on Truck Drivers

As the sun sets later and the days grow longer, spring brings with it the contentious practice of daylight savings time . This year, daylight savings time starts on March 10 ^th at 2 AM local time. While opinions on this biannual time shift may vary, one thing remains undeniable: its impact on various aspects of our lives, including the crucial role of truck drivers in our economy. Let’s take a look at the multifaceted effects of daylight savings time on truck drivers.

Embracing the Extra Hour

For truck drivers, the additional hour of daylight afforded by daylight savings time can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it presents opportunities for increased productivity and efficiency. With more daylight hours available, drivers can extend their driving schedules, potentially covering more ground and reducing delivery times. Moreover, the extended daylight encourages safer driving conditions, as visibility is improved, reducing the risk of accidents. However, truck drivers must be aware of how the time change can affect their breaks. Most electronic logging devices will automatically account for the time change. But if you are using paper logs, it’s helpful to mark the March 10 ^th log with “daylight savings time”.

Disrupting Sleep Patterns

However, the transition to daylight savings time is not without its challenges. One of the most significant issues is the disruption to the body's internal clock. Just as with any other profession, truck drivers rely heavily on consistent sleep patterns to maintain alertness and focus while on the road. The abrupt shift in time can lead to disruptions in sleep patterns, resulting in fatigue and decreased cognitive function. Truck drivers should adjust their bedtime a few days before the time change to help ensure a good night’s sleep . Also, avoiding stimulants like caffeine close to bedtime can help mitigate the effects of disrupted sleep patterns.

Increasing Fuel Use

Since daylight savings time adds an hour to the workday, it means that truck drivers can start their day in the dark. Truck drivers will use their headlights more frequently, which depletes the battery and increases fuel usage. Thus, drivers should check their headlights in the mornings.

Daylight savings time undoubtedly presents both opportunities and challenges for truck drivers. While the additional hour of daylight can enhance productivity and safety on the road, it also necessitates careful consideration of its impact on sleep patterns and alertness. Understanding how daylight savings time affects truck drivers will help them to be efficient and safe on the road.

What's New at DVC!

It's hard to believe the holidays are almost here! We have been busy with new projects and events. Here are some of the highlights.

Hauling Heavy Equipment in PA & NJ

Whether the jobsite is in Pennsylvania or New Jersey, our drivers transport a variety of heavy equipment to help our customers get their projects done on time. We recently transported the long reach of a Hitachi 470 Excavator (top) from Elizabethtown to Blandon (PA) and a John Deere 345 Excavator (bottom) from Reading, Pennsylvania to Stewartsville, New Jersey for an Empire Services and Elk Environmental Services (Empire Group affiliates) project.

Transport and Dispose C &D Debris

From bricks to wood, we transport materials to disposal facilities. We assisted Empire Services by transporting and disposing debris from an emergency demolition of vacant building damaged by fire. We backed our roll-off truck underneath a stone arch railroad bridge to receive several loads of debris from Empire Services’ excavator.

Thanksgivemas 2023

It was a beautiful day for Motta’s Country Gardens and Landscaping Thanksgivemas on Saturday, November 4th. We enjoyed the food, games, raffle, and petting zoo! Santa, the Fightin’ Phils Screwball and Motta’s Rocky stopped by to join in the fun. It was a wonderful event that collected a lot of toys for Toys for Tots. We can’t wait for next year’s Thanksgivemas!

King Frost Parade 2023

It was a beautiful and warm evening for the 59th Annual King Frost Parade on Saturday, October 28th in Hamburg, PA. Everyone loved the decorations on our 1973 Mack Day Cab, 2024 Kenworth Dump Truck, 2020 Ford F550 Service Truck, and 2022 Kenworth Roll off Truck. Our drivers and volunteers had a great time and look forward to next year’s parade – the 60th Anniversary! We send a big thank you to the families of Terry & Tommy Wentzel for handing out candy.

At DVC, we are thankful for the opportunity to work on these projects and be a part of these fun community events. We are also thankful for our team and everyone who works behind the scenes to keep us operating safely and efficiently. We look forward to the projects we will be working on in the winter!

A Memorable King Frost Parade

Everyone will remember this year’s 59 ^th Annual King Frost Parade because it almost didn’t happen. In September, the parade’s organizers announced the cancellation due to lack of volunteers. Once the news got out, people were upset and a crowd of 100 showed up at the town meeting concerning the parade. The outpouring of support from residents and local businesses got the parade back on track. The parade began in 1964 as way to bring people to Hamburg and to welcome the cooler weather. Empire Group was proud to take part in this Hamburg tradition.

Empire Group (DVC and Elk Environmental Services affiliates) had five vehicles in the lineup:

A Chilly Fishing Rodeo & Picnic

It was a chilly start to Empire Group’s Annual Fishing Rodeo and Picnic on Sunday, October 8 ^th . Held at Todd and Karen O’Neill’s farm, Empire Group employees and their families enjoyed a fun morning of fishing and prizes, which ended with a great lunch. There was a great turnout for the event with 60 people attending. To get everyone warmed up, a table of assorted drinks and coffee with pastries was set up. The action started around 9:00 a.m. and lasted until 12:00 p.m.

The property contained three ponds of different sizes to provide budding fisherman (and fisherwomen) their choice of spots to cast their lines. When not fishing, people explored the beautiful farm. The kids got an up-close look at the animals, which included baby yaks, camels, donkeys, goats, and bison. The camels were happy being fed treats from Chuck Lightcap’s (Empire Services) granddaughter, Marlow Snyder, and Chase Oesterling, Glenn Oesterling’s (Elk) son. The farm also provided a great spot for lunch overlooking the ponds.

We were treated to delicious hotdogs and burgers along with French fries and drinks from the On Fire Youth Ministries food truck. After lunch, we enjoyed watching the kids receive prizes. There were a number of awards culminating with the grand prize winner who caught the most fish - Jake Oesterling with 16 fish. Congratulations Jake! And every child who attended was gifted a Wal-Mart gift card.

As the fishing rodeo came to an end, we all had fun stories to share. No matter the affiliate company, the employees of the Empire Group come together to take part in many of the family-oriented events held by the company. We would like to thank Todd and Karen O'Neill and Russ Oswalt for putting on this great event once again. We hope to see everyone back next year!

A Great Day of Golf

The Annual Empire Golf Classic was held on September 16, 2023, at Willow Hollow Golf Course in Leesport, PA. It was a chilly start to a beautiful day, and we had 84 of the finest golfers from Berks County playing in this fun event. There was a shot gun start at 7:00 AM and all the action was completed by 11:30 AM. Once the match was over, we enjoyed a wonderful lunch of fried chicken, cold cuts, pierogies, baked beans, potato salad, macaroni salad and various side dishes, snacks and drinks. After the luncheon, the following winners were announced:

First Place: Val Santo, Ray Plummer, Dave Albright, and Mike Wagner with a score of minus 20 – an excellent score! A replacement was brought in for Val but didn’t leave his name. We wish you a speedy recovery Val! This team was a guest of Berks Transfer.

Second Place: J P Mascaro team – Steve Medaglia, Geoff Ward, John Colucci and Scott Hefentrayer. The team had a score of minus 14 – an awesome score! The team was a guest of DVC Trucking.

Third Place: Haines & Kibblehouse team – Michael Mast, Baird Gavin, Ryan Haines, and Dan Kozel with a score of minus 12 – great playing guys! The team was a guest of DVC Trucking.

What Do You Think: Proposed Automatic Braking on Commercial Trucks

Safety is a priority in the trucking industry. Trucking companies follow regulations created by federal agencies such as the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration ( FMCSA ) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) (both are part of the Department of Transportation). Both agencies strive to protect truck drivers and create safer roads through rules. These agencies, including the Department of Transportation, have recently issued a notice of proposed rulemaking that could create a new federal motor vehicle safety standard for Class 3 through 8 trucks. However, there has been a lively debate on the efficacy of this proposal.

The proposed rule requires Class 3 through 8 vehicles (over 10,000 pounds) to be equipped with an automatic emergency braking (AEB) system. This rulemaking was mandated by the Bipartisan Infrastructure law and echoed in the safety recommendations by the National Transportation Safety Board. The NHTSA purports the new rule could save over 150 lives and prevent over 20,000 crashes a year. Combined with a forward collision warning (FCW) system, the AEB provides additional power to prevent an accident.

While AEB systems have become a safety standard for passenger vehicles, requiring them for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles could have the opposite outcome. Russ Oswalt, VP of Transportation for DVC, believes the AEB system will not be effective in preventing an accident. For example, if a deer jumps out in front of a truck, the abrupt stopping could cause the trailer to slide which could hit vehicles behind the truck or in the other lane.

The proposed rule is expected to become final next year and is not retroactive. New vehicles must have an AEB system by model year 2027.

What's the Big Deal About Operation Sideswipe?

There have been many scams that have affected the trucking industry. Yet, one of the biggest scams this year prompted the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Louisiana to establish “Operation Sideswipe”. This scam defrauds not only the insurance industry, but also the trucking industry. But what exactly is “Operation Sideswipe”?

Operation Sideswipe is the crack down on staged-crash accidents involving a tractor-trailer and a car. The scheme involves a “spotter” who identifies a target. The person driving the vehicle is called the “slammer,” who causes an accident with a truck. After the accident, the driver and/or passengers file a false police report. They then lie in depositions and file fraudulent lawsuits. So far, there have been 50 people convicted of the crime, and the government believes there have been 150 of these accidents in New Orleans dating back to 2015. Trucking companies and their insurance companies have paid millions in settlements.

Is the Pain Worth It?

Most of the accidents resulted in minor damage to the truck or the vehicle. However, there are some cases where medical treatment was sought by scammer and/or the passengers in the car. For example, a couple injured in a staged accident underwent extensive medical treatment – on purpose. According to the U.S. Attorney’s office , the couple believed they would increase the value of their lawsuit by getting injured. The couple (along with their co-defendants) were ordered to pay $5 million in restitution and received four years each in prison.

Not Even in the Accident

There have been some cases where the person who filed the lawsuit wasn’t even driving the car. The person was the passenger then switched seats at the time of the accident. Or the person wasn’t in the vehicle that was “sideswiped” by the truck. And just went you thought it couldn’t get worse, there were attorneys involved in the scams. One attorney is charged with paying “slammers” a certain dollar amount for each passenger in the crash vehicle.

Thanks to “Operation Sideswipe,” truck drivers in the New Orleans area have been warned to be alert for these scams. As summer winds down in August, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is gearing up for their Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. The goal of the campaign is to educate drivers on the dangers of drunk-driving (and drug-impaired driving). While we are all aware of the consequences of drunk driving, they are not enough to dissuade people from getting behind the wheel. This campaign is especially important for truck drivers, since one of the most overlooked safety regulations concerns alcohol.

One of the seven Unsafe Driving BASICs, the Controlled Substance and Alcohol BASIC (behavior analysis and safety improvement category) pertains to the unsafe operation of a commercial motor vehicle by drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, specifically addressing 49 CFR parts 382 and 392 . It’s not just drivers that are culpable since motor carriers are required to perform an annual drug and alcohol Clearinghouse query. The purpose of this query is to electronically check for drug and alcohol testing violations that may have been reported. Motor carriers must run this query once a year.

The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign begins in August and extends into September (until Labor Day). According to NHTSA, this period is particularly deadly since school is out, more drivers are on the road and people take advantage of the days of summer by partying. While no one should be driving impaired, there are strict regulations for truck drivers since they are behind the wheel of a rig that could weigh up to 80,000 pounds and requires more than five times the distance to stop. The blood alcohol content for a non-commercial driver is 0.08% is the legal limit for intoxication, but for a truck driver the federal legal limit is 0.04%.

It's not surprising to learn that the causes of accidents for non-intoxicated truck drivers are the same for intoxicated truck drivers. The size of vehicle alone can cause a devastating accident. Add alcohol and the accident is ten times worse since an intoxicated truck driver has poor motor control, blurred vision, impaired judgement, slower reaction time and an increased rate of risky behavior. It is vital that every driver take Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over to heart. Avoiding alcohol while on the job can not only save your life, but it can also save the lives of others – family, friends, co-workers, etc.

There has been an alarming increase of lawsuits in the trucking industry leaving trucking companies on edge. This rise has given way to large verdicts, which have coined the term “nuclear verdicts.” While trucking lawsuits have steadily increased over the past 20 years, they have skyrocketed in the last five years. Nuclear verdicts are jury awards that surpass $1 million. According to Transport Topics , from April 2020 to June 2023, the median average plaintiffs award was $27.5 million and the median average award for settlements was $759,875. Yet, while verdicts increased, fatal truck accidents decreased 34% from 2000 to 2020. What has propelled these nuclear verdicts?

The Reptile Theory

The surge in nuclear verdicts (and inflated settlements) is due to lawyers using the reptile theory in the courtroom. This strategy is rooted in the reptilian region of the mind, which is biologically sensitive to danger. It is broken into two parts. The first part is where the plaintiff’s attorney gives jurors the notion that they are defenders of their community, and the second part is when the attorney has the jurors believing they have the power to protect their community by taking action against the bad actors. The action is a nuclear verdict.

It wouldn’t be summer without high humidity levels. When the humidity is high, the outside temperature feels much hotter. The start of summer has brought us high temperatures and humidity, a bad combination that is hard on trucks. And with the high humidity levels we’ve been having, it’s important to do vehicle maintenance checks daily to help prevent costly repairs.

1. Cooling System – An overheated engine is the top cause of summer breakdowns. You should check coolant levels before and after a journey. Have you flushed the coolant in the past year? If not, you should flush it as soon as possible. The rust and scale deposits that have built up can cause overheating and damage your coolant system. Also, if the anti-freeze concentration is thin, it won’t be effective.

2. Tires – Heat and humidity affect tire pressure and treads. On very humid days, the excess moisture in the air causes tires to swell. Humidity can also cause heat rot – cracking, splitting, and leaking. High temperatures cause air molecules in tires to vibrate and push against the walls, which causes them to expand. Also, check the tire treads. Excessive heat causes tires to wear down quicker and can exacerbate pre-existing damage.

3. Oil Change – We know oil changes are part of fleet maintenance. However, an extra oil change in the summer can be beneficial since extreme heat speeds up the thermal breakdown of oil, making it a less effective lubricant.

4. Battery – Summer heat can also affect batteries. Check the battery in your truck for corrosion. The buildup of corrosion can weaken the battery’s voltage. Use a battery cleaner to neutralize the acid and reduce the damage.

Summer is the best time to get out on the road. This is especially true for truck drivers. Flowers blooming, bees buzzing and grills lighting up are just some of the things that make up summer. Yet, there is more to summer than you know. To celebrate summer, we thought we would share some interesting facts about this sizzling season.

1. The summer solstice can fall anywhere between June 20 ^th to the 22 ^nd each year in the northern hemisphere. The word solstice comes from the Latin words “sol” and “sistere”. Sol means sun and sistere means stop or halt.

2. Frisbees are a popular sport that came from throwing pie plates. Invented in 1870s, the frisbee was originally a pie plate that because a summer pastime.

3. Popsicles were invented by accident! Eleven-year-old Frank Epperson inadvertently created the popsicle in 1905 by leaving his soda with a stirring stick outside on his porch overnight. The cold night air froze the soda, leaving the stick upright. The “Epsicle” was born! The name popsicle was created by Frank’s own kids who called his invention “Pop’s ‘sicle.” Frank liked the name so much, he patented it in 1923.

4. In 1816, there was no summer. The volcanic eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia blocked out the atmosphere with dust, ash and sulfur oxide. The event caused a significant drop in global temperatures resulting in winter-like climates.

5. The Eiffel Tower grows in the summer! The heat expands the iron of the Eiffel Tower causing it to grow 6 inches during the summer.

6. July is National Ice Cream month! There are 12 types of ice cream and over 1,000 flavors around the world.

7. The midnight sun appears. This sun is visible for 24 hours! It is a natural phenomenon that occurs around the start of summer each year. Northern lands that benefit from the midnight sun are Canada, Sweden, Iceland, Finland, Russia, Norway, and Alaska. In fact, the sun doesn’t set for two-and-a-half months in Barrow, Alaska.

Top Four Safety Tips When Driving Near a Severe Storm

When a storm comes up quickly on your route, what should you? Normally, you wouldn’t entertain this question, especially living in the northeast. However, in the past few years, storms have increased in quantity and in severity. We all remember the severe storms that hammered Pennsylvania and New Jersey in July 2021. Eleven tornados stretched from Allentown, Pennsylvania to Red River, New Jersey. There were six tornadoes last month across the Delaware Valley with four in New Jersey, one in Delaware and one in Pennsylvania. The threat of tornadoes in our region is very real and truck drivers must be prepared for them. Here are the top four safety tips when driving near a tornado.

1. Check the Weather – The weather can change very quickly, so it’s vital to check weather reports from local radio stations and/or the National Weather Service every ten minutes. It’s also important to get weather alerts via your phone.

2. Get to a Safe Area – You cannot outrun a tornado. If you see one brewing near you, get to a safe area (or shelter site). This can be a store or an office building, and get to the innermost part of the building at the lowest level. Stay clear of windows, big and small.

3. Pull Over – If you cannot get to a safe area, pull over and turn off the truck. Exit the vehicle and get to a low-lying area (a ditch or depression) and cover your head with your hands (watch for flooding). Do not get under an overpass or bridge. If you cannot get out of the vehicle, put your head below the windows and cover your head with your hands and a blanket (or jacket).

4. Keep a Storm Kit – Just like a winter weather kit, you should have a storm kit. It should contain a phone charger cord, bottled water, first aid kit, a blanket, a flashlight with extra batteries, raincoat, boots, and granola bars.

Tons of Fun at Touch-a-Truck 2023

DVC’s table was set up between R & R Games and Med-Ed (A FirstEnergy Company). We were kept on our toes not only to help the kids into the truck but also to make sure our tent did not blow away! By walking around the event, it was clear that there more exhibitors and families this year. The kids loved learning about the different vehicles and how they were used as well as collecting giveaways. The DVC team handed out coloring books featuring construction vehicles along with small packs of crayons to the kids as they waited in line to see the truck. They were very popular since we ran out of them by 12:30 PM. For safety reasons, the air was bled out so the air horn did not work and the vehicle would not move. However, the truck bed vibration button did work and surprised many adults! The vendors provided samples and educated the kids on their services, along with those selling their goods (i.e., crocheted hats and jewelry).

There was so much for the kids to explore, from large construction vehicles to Reading Police motorcycles. Even Chase from Paw Patrol stopped by to take pictures! Yet, the kids loved meeting Reading Police K-9 Ghost as well as the cats from the Reading Humane Society. The event was organized by the Junior League of Reading . We wish to send a big thank you to them for such a great event. The Touch-a-Truck event (and others) enables the Junior League to continue to offer valuable youth programs in the greater Reading area. The team at DVC cannot wait for next year’s event!

We see them on the road all the time, yet we don’t pay much attention to them. They are truck drivers. To be a truck driver takes a set of special skills along with permits and licenses. When we see a truck driver hauling an unusual or oversize load, we most often cringe, thinking how do does he (or she) drive that truck without worrying the load on the truck will fall off or tip over the truck. Also, not every truck driver hauls the same type of load, which is why there are different types of truck drivers. And there are some we see more than others. 1. Flatbed Truck Drivers – The flatbed refers to medium to heavy-load trailers. It’s used to transport oddly shaped freight that will not fit on any other truck. This type of truck driver must have expert knowledge of balancing loads, such as heavy machinery, houses, and pipes. Flatbed trucks have adjustable suspensions, which can lower or raise the flatbed. 3. Spring promotes creativity! Scientists believe the longer days cause people to be more active, happy, and creative.

4. Baby birds learn to sing in the spring. They learn to sing from hearing other birds chirping while looking for their mates, which happens in the spring.

5. Daylight savings starts mid-March, which gives us an extra hour to enjoy the outdoors.

6. There are a lot of holidays in the spring, including Easter, Passover, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Cinco De Mayo.

7. Spring produces worms! The full moon in March is called the Full Worm Moon, where the ground thaws and extra rain encourages worms to come above ground.

8. Animals come out of hibernation, such as bears and bees.

9. Spring is a time for eggs – and not just the Easter kind! Frogs lay eggs near water in early March and leatherback sea turtles return to the beaches where they were born to lay their eggs.

10. The temperature goes up 5 degrees per month starting in March.

Do You Know a Highway Angel?

While all the necessary steps can be taken to help ensure a safe journey, sometimes things can go wrong. The Highway Angel Program is a constant reminder that there are people who help each other, especially in dangerous situations. They range from alerting a driver of a problem with his or her rig (e.g., fire or open door) to offering drinks to travelers stuck in traffic due to an accident. There are other times when a driver will get out of his or her truck to help others involved in a car accident. This was the case with the most recent Highway Angel recipient, Zach Yeakley . An Army National Guard member, Yeakley came upon a multi-vehicle accident and used his training to assist first responders as well as rescue six crash victims. And in some instances, drivers needed medical assistance because of health issues (e.g., allergic reactions and heart attacks).

This program is an inspiration to not only truck drivers, but also to all drivers on the road. More than 50 recipients are recognized each year with the Highway Angel of the Year announced at the Truckload Carriers Association’s annual convention.

When you’re on the road, the main things you’re thinking about are: Am I driving safely? Am I making good time? Is my rig driving well? The last thing you’re thinking about is nutrition. This is perfectly understandable. There are so many items to check off to ensure each journey is successful as well as to watch for bad weather and poorly maintained roads. Nutrition for truck drivers needs to be as important as making sure a truck is ready for the road. Eating healthy and being active on the road isn’t as hard you think. Below are healthy nutrition ideas for truck drivers that are as easy as scheduling truck stops.

1. Pack Smart – Packing smart meals and snacks will help reduce your waistline and save you time and money. This takes some planning, but it will be worth it. Once you have gotten used to planning your meals, it will become second nature to you. There are three things to keep in mind when planning: variety, balance, and moderation. Some examples of healthy snacks include fresh or canned fruit (no added sugar); whole grain bread, cereal and crackers; and fresh veggies (washed and cut up). If you have a cooler, you can bring low-fat yogurt, cheese sticks and a small container of milk (skim or 1%). Small meals can be canned tuna or chicken packed in water as well as fresh meats (e.g., turkey, ham, and lean roast beef).

2. Stay Hydrated – It’s easy to forget to hydrate, aside from having a drink with a meal. Keep a large water bottle (or gallon bottle) of fresh water in the truck. If drinking plain water is hard for you, try some flavored water or put fresh fruit in your water.

3. Snack Smart – When eating out of a bag or box, we tend to overeat. Create smart snack baggies for your ride. You can measure out raw veggies, pretzels, crackers, and nuts. Or purchase 100 calorie® snack packs . Also, pick a date each month to restock your snacks so you’re not overbuying.

4. Walk Break – Being active on your hauls is important too, especially since truck drivers can spend up to 11 hours a day behind the wheel. A 15-minute walk will stretch your legs and combat fatigue.

Top Seven Defensive Driving Techniques for Truck Drivers

When learning to drive a truck, you are often labeled either a defensive or an offensive driver. It is often argued which type of driver practices safe driving. Defensive driving is the practice of using strategies to predict hazards on the road to minimize accidents. On the other hand, offensive driving is taking control of the road by forcing vehicles around you to adapt. While it may seem that taking control of the road is a safer way to protect you and your truck, it’s not. Defensive driving is the safer way to drive. This method of driving has been around for nearly 90 years. We know what defensive driving means, but what are the top techniques for truck drivers?

Invented by a British Race Car Driver

Defensive driving techniques were invented by Mark Pepys (the Earl of Cottenham) in 1937 to help reduce accidents during police pursuits. He was a race car driver and part of a committee set up by Lord Trenchard to investigate accident rates among police drivers in the United Kingdom. This method of driving was adopted in the U.S. and has saved lives. The techniques revolve around what drivers might do and how road conditions can affect their driving. Defensive driving consists of two principles: driver awareness and creating a buffer. But how are they done?

Top 7 Defensive Driving Techniques

Here are the top seven techniques to help you drive defensively.

1. Scan Ahead – Scan the road ahead to check for any dangerous situations, such as backed up traffic, a vehicle on the side of the road or an emergency or police vehicle proceeding around traffic. In a city, you should scan ahead 1.5 blocks and, on the highway, a quarter of a mile.

2. Maintain a Safe Distance (The Buffer) – Trucks should have at least 2 car lengths between them and the vehicle in front of the truck. This should provide 4 seconds of distance for trucks driving up to 40 mph – add 1 second for each additional 10 mph of speed.

3. Create a Way Out – There should be enough room for you to physically create a path out of harm’s way (front, left side or right side).

4. Don’t Focus on the Light – When at an intersection, focus on the intersection itself and not the green light. It’s important to check your surroundings, including pedestrians and speeding cars.

5. Drive Backwards Slowly – You know you’re backing up, but do the vehicles around you? When backing up, go very slow as to alert others around you of your truck’s presence.

6. Stay Focused – Know the traffic patterns around you and always stay alert. This means no distractions, such as eating, smoking, or talking on the phone. Be sure to get plenty of sleep and do not drive with alcohol in your system.

7. Be Prepared – Always plan your route ahead of time, especially for bad weather, bridges, and high traffic areas. Keep a “survival” kit in your truck in case you get stuck behind an accident or in bad weather. Plus, keep both hands on the steering wheel and sit straight so you’re alert for any situation.

Dempster Invents the Dumpster

Interestingly, the name of the man who invented it and the word dumpster is similar. George Dempster invented the dumpster as a solution to a growing waste issue. He owned a construction business and knew first-hand the logistics of hauling waste. Applying his knowledge of heavy machinery, Dempster designed and created the Dempster Dumpster in 1935 in Knoxville, Tennessee. In 1937, Nashville, Tennessee, became the first city to adopt the Dempster Dumpster for trash disposal.

The Dumpster Goes Public

Dempster intended to use the dumpster solely for his construction projects. He even trademarked the name “Dempster Dumpster.” However, word got out about his invention and soon his company, Dempster Brothers, Inc., was inundated with orders. The Dempster Dumpster became so profitable that Dempster closed his construction business to focus on manufacturing it. Before the Dempster Dumpster, businesses relied on a crew of sanitation workers shoveling waste onto a flatbed truck and unloading by hand at a landfill. This method was inefficient and unsanitary. Now, all that was needed was one person to pick up the dumpster and haul it away.

From Dumpsters to Garbage Trucks

Dempster improved the initial model by replacing the pulleys and cables with hydraulic lifting using chains and pivot arms. After World War II, Dempster created the Dempster Kolector. It was a single-axle dumping container with ten cubic yards of volume. From there, Dempster created the Dempster-Dumpmaster in the 1950s. It would become the modern garbage truck, with a front-loading design that allowed truck drivers to empty multiple containers on one trip.

Dempster’s inventions, starting with the Dempster Dumpster, revolutionized waste collection. He created a system that reduced the labor needed for collecting waste and made the process more sanitary. With over 230 million online shoppers in the U.S., it’s no wonder why there are so many truck drivers on the road making deliveries, picking up returns and stocking warehouses. The increased volume means that truck drivers must be extra careful on the road. It also means that law enforcement will be on the lookout for anything out of place on trucks as well as dangerous driving. No one wants to get pulled over and get fined. So, it’s imperative that truck drivers be aware of the reasons why they could get pulled over. Here are the top three reasons you need to know to avoid a ticket and to keep you safe on the road.

1. Lane Deviations – They raise concerns about a driver’s health – illness, fatigue or impairment. If you get pulled over for this infraction, a law enforcement agent can also inspect your cab for distractions .

2. Improperly Secured or Balanced Load – We’ve all seen news reports where an improperly secured load fell off a truck and caused an accident. In fact, this violation causes an estimated 200,000 accidents a year in the U.S. It is vital that before loading the trailer, these safety procedures are followed:

Top Five Winter Driving Tips for Truckers

Winter has arrived! It’s important to not only get your truck ready for snow and ice, but also to get into a winter-driving frame of mind. While we can’t predict how much snow our region will get, we can count on bad weather. If we have learned anything from recent winters, we know that December through February can bring a variety of weather, from snow to hail. To help you stay safe on the road, here are the top five winter driving tips.

1. Leave Extra Space – Give yourself extra space between your rig and the vehicle in front of you. Instead of leaving one second for every ten feet of vehicle length (under 40 mph), you should leave three seconds. If you’re driving over 40 mph, you should leave 6 seconds.

2. Carry Winter Supplies – You never know when you will get stuck on the road during a snowstorm (or waiting for an accident to clear in frigid temperatures). These essentials include:

a. Flashlight

b. Blanket

c. Extra Clothes & Gloves

d. Bag of Salt

e. Tire Chains

f. Snacks

g. Jumper Cables

h. Snow Scrapers & Brushes

i. Flares

j. Windshield Fluid

k. Rain Gear

l. Portable Radio & Batteries

3. Avoid Black Ice – This thin layer of ice makes the road look wet. You can spot black ice by the way the driver(s) ahead of you stop and if there is frost on your truck’s antennae and mirrors.

4. Drive Slow – Although this is a given during snow events, it’s also important when it’s raining since a rainstorm can easily reduce visibility. Driving slowly will give you more time to react. Also, it’s very easy to hydroplane when driving too fast.

5. Pay Attention to Tire Spray – The amount of tire spray will help you determine the condition of the road. If there is a large amount of water being sprayed from the vehicles around you, then the road is wet. However, if the tire spray has relatively less water, the road has started to freeze.

No truck driver wants to drive in bad weather, but sometimes it cannot be avoided. When this happens, it’s imperative to drive slowly and err on the side of caution. Implementing Heavy Equipment Hauling Safety Procedures

Any company that hauls heavy equipment must follow the cargo securement rules issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration . Failure to do so can result in vehicle violations and hefty fines. Yet, there are accidents caused by improperly secured equipment on trailers or loose machine parts fall off during transport. At DVC, we take the safety of our drivers and public very seriously. We implement heavy equipment safety procedures to help ensure a safe transport. Let’s take a look at some of these safety procedures.

1. Safe Loading of Equipment. This is the start of the journey for every truck driver. The right trailer (or heavy duty hauler) must be chosen to ensure the equipment will not only fit the trailer, but also stay secured. The driver must take into consideration numerous factors such as the height and weight of the equipment, oversize or overweight permit, and condition of trailer.

2. Appropriate Securing Devices. There are several types of devices used to secure the equipment to the trailer:

a. Tie-Downs

b. Chain

c. Hooks, Clamps or Ties

d. Blocking and Bracing

e. Chocks, Wedges or Cradles

f. Friction Mats (or Other Friction Devices)

The weight of the heavy equipment determines the type of securing device(s) and the how many to use. For example, heavy equipment must be secured using no less than four tie-downs with a working load limit of 5,000 pounds or more.

3. Choosing Appropriate Attachment Points. The equipment should have designated areas for tie-downs by the manufacturer (in addition to your own attachment points).

4. Ensure Attachments are Secured. Before transport, check to make sure the attachments (e.g., a b oom ) are lowered and secured as well as check doors, tailgates, tools, and spare tires.

5. Clear Visibility Around Truck. Once loaded, the driver must make sure the heavy equipment does not obscure his view – front, back and sides. The driver should also have free movement around the equipment (i.e., entering and exiting the tractor).

Empire Group Wins Big at Keystone Truckin' Nationals

Ellen: How did you prepare for it?

Eric: We cleaned up the trucks Friday night and a little on Saturday morning. We brought the trucks over, including the Empire Wrecking Chevy Utility Body truck on the flatbed.

Austin: We cleaned them up Friday night. It was nice seeing them shine, since I’m usually under the hood.

Ellen: What did you think of the show?

Eric: At first, I didn’t know what to expect. But it was great – a great representation of trucks from major companies. The show was a great way to get the guys out to show off our trucks. We were able to see the other trucks and equipment as well as watch the trucks that were racing.

Austin: I was really impressed with the line up. Gear Jammer Magazine was there, and I think the Mack and Chevy Utility Body trucks from the show will be in the next issue.

Ellen: Did companies attending the event set up tables to meet people? Anyone famous attend?

Eric: There weren’t many tables set up. We had a table with a banner and gave out Russ’s [Oswalt] business card. There wasn’t anyone famous.

Austin: I agree with Eric, I didn’t see many tables set up or anyone famous.

Ellen: What else can you tell me about the show?

Eric: We saw the fastest sleeper cab going 106 miles per hour in 12.5 seconds!

Austin: We saw some competitors there, such as BHL and Blair Trucking. An old customer (about eight years ago) came up to us and commented on the good work we did for him.

Ellen: Was the show beneficial for Empire Group?

Eric: Definitely. It was a great way to show off our trucks, show their quality. It also showed that we take pride in our jobs and in Empire Group’s capabilities. Plus, it was free advertising.

Austin: Yes. We will definitely be there next year. We have great trucks and equipment and it’s nice to show them off. The show got our name out there, and there could be potential work as a result. And it’s a good way to meet people in the industry while enjoying a fun afternoon. We lucked out with great weather!

What's National Truck Driver Appreciation Week?

It's that time of year where we celebrate truck drivers across the nation with National Truck Driver Appreciation Week ! Did you know there are nearly 4 million truck drivers in America? While we appreciate them every day, especially during a driver shortage, we enjoy setting aside this time to let them know we truly appreciate them.

National Truck Driver Appreciation Week (September 11- 17th) was founded by Bill Webb in the early 1990's, who was in the driver recruiting department for a trucking company in Texas. In the spirit of retention, the campaign set out to create a positive image of truck drivers to the public while showing respect to fellow truck drivers. This was going on at the same time the Truckload Carriers Association was spearheading their Highway Angel Program, another effort to improve the image of truck drivers as well as to recognize truck drivers for their good deeds on the road. During National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, there are events held nationally, from fairs to truck shows.

This week is so popular, Canada has their own celebration - National Trucking Week (the first week of September). While Webb started the campaign, Don Bowman is credited with expanding the celebration nationally while he was Chairman of D.M.Bowman in the mid-nineties. From there, the rest is history.

At DVC, we salute truck drivers who strive to safely complete their hauls on time through bad weather, construction detours and supply chain delays. We truly value our own drivers, who go above and beyond to help fellow co-workers and put in a hard day's work in safely hauling a variety of materials. What is National Preparedness Month?

September is National Preparedness Month. It is only fitting since September is smack in the middle of hurricane season. However, this safety observance is not only for hurricanes, but for any disaster or emergency in homes, businesses, or schools as well as properties and roads. To be prepared means not only to prepare a structure or area for a storm, but also for the aftermath of one, such as the storm producing a leak, contamination, spill, or injury. In the Northeast region of the U.S., we are reminded of the importance of National Preparedness Month by the one year anniversary of Hurricane Ida wreaking havoc on Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. We know what the observance is for, but why was it created?

National Preparedness Month was created after 9/11 by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The agency was created to manage disasters and emergencies since the late 1800s. What most people do not know is that FEMA was initially a legislative act, which was officially launched by President Jimmy Carter in 1979. It managed under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. This month, everyone is encouraged to create a safety plan , which includes how and what to report during a disaster or emergency. The safety plan should not only include how to protect your home or business, but also your vehicles and equipment. Protecting your fleet of vehicles can mean ensuring they are secured in a garage or warehouse. If coverage is not available, it’s recommended to relocate them to higher ground. Equipment, such as trailers, dumpsters, and dozers, should also be stored away or secured in place. Being prepared and practicing safety protocols has many benefits, including reducing fear and making the community safer.

At DVC, we take every measure to protect our team and vehicles from severe weather, floods, and icy roads. We also make every effort to protect our fleet to reduce damage during storms or emergencies. We hope everyone celebrates National Preparedness Month and values safety as much as we do!

Another Great Empire Group Golf Classic!

The 27 ^th Annual Empire Group Golf Classic was held on August 20th, 2022, at Willow Hollow Golf Course in Leesport, PA. It was a great day weather-wise, and we had 88 of the finest golfers from Berks County arrive to play in this fun event. There was a shot gun start at 8:00 AM and all the action was completed by 12:00 noon. Once the dust settled, we had a chance to collect our thoughts and enjoy a wonderful lunch. After the luncheon, the following winners were announced:

First Place went to Team Haines & Kibblehouse (Ryan Haines, Michael Mast, Alan Klusman and Baird Garvin) with a score of 13 under par – an excellent score!

Second Place went to a team comprised of Phil Wagner (Elk Environmental Services), Connor Perkins and Conor Kelly (Penn Star) along with Patrick Turnick (Azko Nobel). Penn Star and Azko Nobel are Elk customers. The team had a score of 11 under par – an awesome score!

Third Place went to Team Berks Transfer (Val Santos, Ray Plummer, Dave Albright, and Bill Whitman) with a score of 10 under par -- great playing guys!

How Do Hurricanes Impact the Northeast?

According to NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), the peak of the hurricane season (June through November) will soon be upon us, with 6 to 10 storms developing into hurricanes and 3 to 5 of them having a category 3 (or higher). Before we get into how this forecast will impact the Northeast, let’s take a brief look at how the hurricane season affects the trucking industry.

Hurricanes damage roads, buildings, ports, and bridges, not to mention damage to trucks, chassis, trailers, and equipment. They also cause shipping delays and increase the demand for service; regular routes are detoured due to flooding and debris and the slow rebuilding of the area(s). When these storms occur one after another, they not only cause a local delay, but also a regional one. In 2017, the damage caused by Hurricane Harvey was extensive in Texas and Louisiana, but then Hurricane Irma in Florida soon followed causing regional impacts across the Southern United States.

These delays are made longer by the fact that many heavy-duty vehicles and trucks may be used to deliver life-saving supplies to hard-hit areas. Warehouses and fulfillment centers are temporarily shut down, causing bottlenecks in supply chains. This puts a strain on the trucking industry, which is experiencing a driver shortage to boot.

While hurricanes do not hit the Northeast directly, the remnants of these storms do. They, too, cause damage to roads and other infrastructure as well as transportation delays and supply shortages. Flooding becomes a huge issue, stranding truckers and creating numerous detours. In 2021, Hurricane Ida dumped over seven inches of rain in New York City prompting the National Weather Service to issue a first-ever flash flood emergency. There is also the issue of power outages causing longer delays. Future hurricanes like Ida are going to reach the East Coast much faster and linger longer than storms of the past according to a recent study from Rowan University. This could mean greater damage, a higher cost to ship goods, and more emergency response protocols.

How's Your Truck Handling the Summer Heat?

The summer heat is on and many truck drivers do not perform a vehicle maintenance check before start of the season. Or, if they have done an extensive amount of driving in June, drivers do not perform a vehicle check in July. The extreme temperatures can do a number on your truck – inside and out. To help prevent breakdowns and costly repairs , here are some ways to keep your truck running at optimal levels.

1. Cooling System – Now that we are in the thick of summer, extreme heat can cause a number of engine issues. An overheated engine is the top cause for summer breakdowns. You should check coolant levels before and during these months. If the coolant hasn’t been flushed in the past year, you should do it as soon as possible. Also, if the anti-freeze concentration is thin, it won’t be effective.

2. Tires – Fluctuation in temperatures, even in the summer, can affect tire pressure. Check the tire pressure frequently to help prevent rapid wear on both the outer edges and to reduce fuel costs. Check the tire treads as well. Air and road temperature can cause treads wear down quickly and can even cause a blowout.

3. Oil Change – We all know oil changes are part of fleet maintenance. However, an extra oil change in the summer can be beneficial since extreme heat can speed up the thermal breakdown of oil, which makes it a less effective lubricant.

4. Battery – Summer heat can also affect batteries. Check the battery in your truck for corrosion. The buildup of corrosion can weaken the battery’s voltage. You should use a battery cleaner to neutralize the acid and to reduce the damage.

Top 4 Summer Care Tips for Truck Drivers

With each season, there are tips to help keep truck drivers safe and their vehicles in top working condition. The change in temperature, road condition, weather and traffic are some of the most noticeable changes during certain times of the year. For instance, a large amount of snow and ice in the winter can cause flooding and potholes in the spring. In the summer, road and highway construction are in high gear due to the weather, which can cause delays and the need for alternate routes. Yet, there are summer care tips to help drivers make their hauls more comfortable in the heat of summer.

1. Stay Hydrated – Even if you aren’t loading or unloading your trailer, high temperatures can cause dehydration. It’s easy to forget to drink even one bottle of water when you have a number of deliveries or on a strict schedule. You should keep a few bottles of water in your cab and set the alarm on your watch every few hours to remind you to drink a bottle of water. It’s recommended that a person should drink two and a half liters of water during the summer months.

2. Check your Brakes – The heat of summer can cause a loss of friction between your brake parts, so you should check them regularly. Brake parts can only absorb so much heat to work effectively.

3. Apply Sunscreen – For most people, sunscreen is used only on the beach or at a pool. You can still get a sunburn from driving, especially on your hands, face, neck and left arm (trucker’s arm). Suns creen should be applied before and during your haul – 30 minutes before you get behind the wheel and every two hours during your shift.

4. Check your Tires – Summer heat causes tires to expand and snap. It’s important to check the tires on your rig regularly to help prevent blowouts. They can happen when tires are over- or under-inflated.

FMCSA Extends COVID-19 Waiver Again

In March 2020, the FMCSA issued emergency declaration N2020-002 in response to the national emergency 42 U.S.C. § 5191(b). The emergency declaration exempts drivers and carriers from part 395.3 (maximum driving time) providing direct assistance to relief efforts related to COVID-19. This hours-of-service (HOS) waiver gives truck drivers additional time to make their deliveries. It has been extended since then with the latest extension implemented on May 14, 2022.

Why would the FMCSA extend the HOS waiver again? To ease the supply chain issues and to add to the list of products needed by the public, which affects the restocking of stores. When the HOS waiver was put into action, it covered deliveries of medical supplies and equipment to protect healthcare workers, patients, and the public. The list of products was expanded as the pandemic wore on. The recent extension of the waiver now includes deliveries of diesel exhaust fluid, which helps reduce air pollution caused by diesel engines. The waiver continues to cover all deliveries of gasoline, diesel, ethyl alcohol, jet fuel, propane, natural gas, and ethyl alcohol.

This is good news for trucking companies that deliver products that are in great demand by the public (e.g., groceries). Yet, the question about the HOS waiver remains: how many more will there be this year? The answer lies in how fast the nation comes out of the pandemic. The new extension expires on August 31 ^st . It will be interesting to see how this extension will affect the trucking industry in comparison to the previous ones.

America’s Top Three Scenic Routes for Truck Drivers

Spring is a season where we don't mind the long hauls since the flowers are blooming and the weather is warm. It's also a great time to enjoy the 4 million+ highways and byways in the U.S. So, let's explore the top three scenic routes in the U.S.

San Juan Skyway

The name is misleading because this highway is in Colorado. It's a byway that goes through the San Juan National Forest in Durango. Driving through this majestic forest gives truckers great views of mesas, mountains, and canyons. The byway spans 236 miles and takes about 7 hours to travel, going through the popular towns of Silverton, Telluride, Ouray, and Durango.

Seward Highway

Completed in 1951, this beautiful stretch of highway is 125 miles from Seward to Anchorage. You'll see the Chugach Mountains, Dall sheep and Turnagain Arm Beach (where Beluga Whales hang out!).

Route 6, Pennsylvania

This highway spans over 400 miles from Northern Pennsylvania to New York via Ohio. You'll see Pike Creek Gorge and walk out on the 2,000 foot Kinzua Sky Walk. There are also small towns and even a view of Lake Erie!

Although we listed three, there are plenty of scenic routes in the U.S. to experience. Driving through a national park or on a unique highway makes any long haul enjoyable. It will be interesting to see the new routes that make the list next spring! Safe travels from DVC Trucking !

May is Motorcycle Awareness Month!

Spring signals the start of road trips, especially now that traffic has returned to pre-pandemic levels. This means that there will be more motorcycles on the road. Due to this increase, May has been designated Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Created by the American Motorcyclist Association in the early 1980s, this organization promotes rider safety, licensing, awareness, and education to reduce the number of crashes involving these unique machines.

Motorcycles have been around for over 130 years, and the first one was built by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. It was built in 1885 and named the Daimler Reitwagen . From there, many styles and engines have evolved to create a rich history and a huge following. Motorcycle clubs have popped up across the nation since the 1950s. Since motorcycles are a form of transportation, motorcyclists are afforded the same rights and privileges as motorists.

Each year, there are thousands motorcycle accidents and fatalities. According to recent data, there were 5,458 fatal crashes in 2020. In 76% of these crashes, the point of contact was being struck from the front of the bike. Therefore, it is important to be aware of motorcycles on the road. Below are some tips to help motorists (including truck drivers) drive safely around motorcyclists:

1. Look for motorcycles, especially at intersections.

2. Check your mirrors and blind spots (front, side, and rear for trucks).

3. Use your turn signal.

4. Avoid distracted driving .

5. Stay at least one car length between you and the motorcyclist – more if the road is slippery.

6. Predict a rider looks closer to you that s/he is because of the small size of the motorcycle.

7. Big trucks should leave plenty of room when passing motorcyclists before crossing back over due to the large wind shear created behind them at highway speeds.

Earth Day, Trucking and the Three R's

Earth Day reminds us that we need to take better care of the earth. This year, the theme is Invest in Our Planet. Every industry has made strides to help make a sustainable future, which includes using the three R’s: recycle, reuse, and reduce. The trucking industry takes its role in protecting the environment very seriously by investing in eco-friendly vehicles and other practices, which are focused on utilizing the three R’s.

Recycle: There are several parts of a truck that can be recycled. Tires are the most common since they can be transformed into many products, such as playground turf, tire-derived fuel, and rubberized asphalt. Parts that are still in good working condition can be resold as well as remanufactured. For example, one-third of the total weight of a new Volvo truck is made from recycled material.

Reuse: When it comes to long hauls, eating in the cab is unavoidable. To reduce waste, is recommended to not use single-use packaging. A better option is to use reusable glass or metal containers. The same goes for drinks. Using a reusable water bottle is more practical and economical.

Reduce: The trucking industry has been making strides in reducing their environmental footprint. In 2011, the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) each adopted greenhouse gas emissions standards and fuel economy standards for medium- and heavy-duty trucks. They stemmed fro m a Presidential directive in 2010 to take steps to create clean vehicles. Recently, the EPA has proposed new, stronger standards for heavy-duty vehicles and engines starting in 2027. Along with new standards, there have been advances in diesel engine technology, including more fuel efficient vehicles and clean diesel fuels. Another way to reduce fuel consumption and emissions is to reduce truck idling. This can be done with stop-and-start engines and installing equipment, such as auxiliary power units and energy recovery systems.

The trucking industry has made many advancements to reduce emissions, save gas and reuse parts. Yet, reducing their environmental footprint remains a top issue. It will be interesting to see how this Earth Day will inspire the trucking industry to set new sustainability goals. Top Five Ways to Avoid Distracted Driving

Do you get distracted while driving? It can happen easily and in the blink of an eye. One look at your phone or the radio can do it. April is Distracted Driving Awareness month . It was created by Shelly Forney after the death of her daughter. In 2008, Shelly’s daughter nine-year-old Erica was riding her bike when she was struck and killed by an SUV. The driver was distracted by his cell phone. How can you avoid being distracted while driving? Here are the top five ways to help you become a more focused driver.

1. Do not use your cell phone . This seems obvious, but it’s easier said than done since we have learned to check our phones several times a day. Even talking on the phone using Bluetooth is a distraction.

2. Set your controls/make adjustments . Before getting on the road, set your radio, temperature, GPS … etc. Many dashboards have large digital screens and answering commands or pushing buttons can be the same as answering a phone call.

3. Do not eat or drink . We know that time is money. However, eating while driving to save time can cause an accident, especially if some of your meal gets on your clothes. Also, it is against the law if you do not take your mandatory breaks .

4. Organize your truck . Having a cluttered cab can be distracting not only visually, but also physically when something falls into your lap. Before starting your haul, paperwork should be organized and stored away as well as other items on your dashboard, in your visors or even in your cupholders.

5. Get plenty of sleep . Trying to stay awake during a haul is dangerous, even if it’s a short journey. Not only is getting a good night’s sleep important for your health, but it also protects others on the road with you.

Aside from a driver taking these measures to avoid driver distraction , fleet managers can take a multi-faceted approach as well. Some of these facets include educating their drivers, taking the National Safety Council pledge and monitoring driving behavior.

Happy Women’s History Month! In the past 100 years, there have been great strides made in breaking the bias against women, particularly in certain industries. One of these industries is the trucking industry. Once dominated by men, this industry is steadily seeing an increase in women drivers. This movement has created several organizations dedicated to encouraging women to enter and flourish in this field, such as Women in Trucking and Real Women in Trucking . We celebrate Women’s History Month with a salute to women in trucking, including our own Amber Hughes. I sat down with Amber to learn why she loves being a truck driver.

What made you want to become a truck driver?

I’ve always been good at operating anything I climbed into. Also, my father’s black top company; I knew I could use this skill to help him out.

Were there any obstacles in the way of you becoming a truck driver?

No.

What type of training did you have?

I took a CDL Class A training ( Transportation and Logistics Program ) at Harrisburg Area Community College (Harrisburg, PA) .

What obstacles do you think women encounter in becoming truck drivers?

Although there are many, the biggest one is that employers are stuck in the old ways of women [being] in a man’s field; women can’t do as good as a job as men.

What do you consider a successful haul?

Everything runs smoothly; there is no traffic and no delays. I can get my truck loaded up quickly as well as dump the materials quickly at a landfill.

What is your most memorable haul?

I’ve had many of these, so it’s hard to choose just one! I think there are several things that make a memorable haul, such as meeting new customers, getting to know the foremen, and visiting new places.

What would you tell a woman who is thinking of becoming a truck driver?

Go for it – and don’t let the training intimidate you!

Anything else you would like to add?

There’s no such thing as a “man’s” job. If you really want it, you can get it. You just have to work harder than the guys. It’s worth it! Women are much stronger than the credit we’re given.

Each block in the chain is linked via cryptocurrency and can store information, such as a smart contract . When information is added to a block, it is time stamped creating a timeline. It’s easy to see why blockchains are utilized in a number of industries, which now includes transportation. But how will blockchains help the trucking industry?

Blockchains enable businesses to perform transactions without the use of intermediaries, especially when it comes to payment processing. This means middlemen are cut out of the picture, which puts money back into the pockets of transportation companies. Another issue blockchain has solved is payment disputes. According to Pixelplex , $140 billion a day is held up in payment disputes in the transportation industry. Blockchains eliminate processing delays and disputes from the information attached to a transaction. In using a smart contract, companies automatically receive their payment once the information has been verified. Other bonuses to using blockchains include faster and cost-effective deliveries, easy access to money, better communication with customers, and real-time tracking. Yet, there are some challenges to using them. One challenge is the concerns about cryptocurrency and their volatile fluctuations. Another challenge lies in confronting the current infrastructure to use blockchains in it.

Blockchains have not become the standard yet in the transportation industry. Also, there may be some that are hesitant to use blockchains because not everyone knows how they function. Is the Top of Your Trailer a Snow Hazard?

Winter is here and so is the problem of clearing off snow and ice on top of a trailer. Depending on where you live, snowfall can range from a few inches to a few feet a season. The heavier the snow and ice, the harder it is to clean off the truck. It is vital that truck drivers and fleet owners take the time to properly maintain their trucks before, during and after a snowstorm to help prevent a buildup of snow and ice on top of trailer.

A Deadly Accident

Snow and ice falling off a tractor-trailer is a hazard to other drivers on the road and can cause deadly accidents. It’s such a serious problem that New Hampshire passed a law that requires drivers to clean off the snow and ice from their vehicles before getting on the road. Jessica’s Law was passed in 2002, named after Jessica Smith who was killed when 9-foot piece of ice flew off a tractor-trailer and hit a box which hit her car. Those who do not clean off their trucks face a stiff fine and repeat offenders could lose their license.

Keeping Your Truck Clean

There are several ways truck drivers can keep the top of their trailers clear of snow and ice:

1. Machines – There are machines that act as “super scrapers” to remove snow. They scrape off snow as trucks are driven under it.

2. Pressure Cleaning – There are some trucking companies that do not clean their trucks due to freezing temperatures. However, pressure cleaning tractor-trailers is necessary to remove chunky snow and charcoal grime, not to mention salt, from the wheel wells and the chassis. It’s best to wash your truck in truck bay, as it is warm enough to prevent the water from turning to ice on the vehicle. Also, a clean truck positively represents your company.

3. TrucBrush – This machine is a pair of arms that attach to a front loader. Once the arms are raised, a truck drives under the TrucBrush allowing the polypropylene bristles to remove the snow and ice.

A driver should never attempt to remove snow and ice by climbing on the top and using a shovel. This is dangerous as the top is very slippery. A Brief Look at Transportation's Role in C & D Debris Waste Management

When it comes to the trucking industry, many think of transporting freight or goods. While this is true, transportation companies also transport construction and demolition (C & D) debris. Globally, the C & D waste management market (C & D debris) earned over US$ 210 billion in 2021. Yet, many underestimate the importance of transportation in C & D debris waste management.

C & D debris accounts for nearly one-quarter of the national waste stream. It is a type of waste that includes wood, gypsum, and asphalt. The transport of C & D debris is incidental to construction and demolition work. However, most C & D debris is generated from demolition. Although many construction and demolition companies have gone “green,” there are still materials that cannot be recycled or reused, such as broken glass, old paint cans and some plastics. There is also the issue of contaminated soil. In a construction project, the soil must first be tested. 7 Things You Should Not Do After a Truck Accident

It's that time of year where vehicle accidents increase due to slippery roads from snow and ice. Many of us think we know what to do after getting into an accident with a car or truck, but you would be surprised. If you find yourself in this situation, here are seven things to avoid to help prevent making it worse.

Avoid these Mistakes!

1. Apologize. This may sound harsh, but apologizing may be taken as a claim of responsibility for the accident rather than simply being sorry for it.

2. Make a deal. Do not make a deal for damages. Documentation is needed and you could be paying a lot more for the actual repairs.

3. Leave the Scene. Leaving the scene of an accident is not only reckless but also against the law.

4. Accept Offer of Cash. Do not accept an offer of cash for your repairs as you do not know how bad (or minor) they are at first inspection.

5. Deny Injury. If you and/or your passenger are injured, do not deny medical assistance. You could be doing more damage without realizing it.

6. Offer to Pay. Do not offer to pay anything, even if you are at fault.

7. Administer First Aid. Do not administer first aid unless you are licensed to do so. You can do additional damage.

If you are in an accident, you should immediately dial 911 to report it. Move the vehicle to a safe area, if possible. Remember to remain calm and to check if everyone involved are okay. Be sure to obtain insurance information as well as contact and witness information. Avoid DOT Stops with These Tips

D id you know that the DOT (Department of Transportation) has authorized police to conduct random CSA ( FMCSA 's safety compliance and enforcement program) inspections for trucks? Thus, it pays to keep your fleet in excellent condition. A DOT stop can result in a delay of operations or a heavy fine. P olice officer will do a “circle” check of a truck, meaning they walk around the truck doing a thorough inspection. Below are some tips to help keep your truck operation in top gear.

1. Fire Extinguisher – You would be surprised how many fines are given for faulty fire extinguishers. Check your fire extinguisher at least one a month.

2. Tires – If a popping sound occurs when an officer pulls outward on the steering axle tire, this indicates there are bad bearings in the wheel. Also, make sure you have a spare tire.

3. Rust or Fresh Paint – They could indicate weak metal. Be sure to inspect the paint and decals on your vehicle for any weakness.

4. Trailer Attachment – A faulty fifth wheel attachment to the trailer can result in a runaway trailer. It is important to inspect the fifth wheel every three months and to lubricate it each season.

5. Clean Truck – Aside from being a maintenance task, a clean truck helps keep it in optimal condition. Dirt, road salt and grime can get into cracks and on parts, causing premature wear as well as making the parts heavier and creating potential wind resistance. Also, a clean truck provides a positive image for the company and a good impression for the DOT.

This Thanksgiving, we have many things to be grateful for and to express gratitude. One of them is being able to be help a customer achieve their goals for a project. We are also thankful for our employees, who help customers stay on schedule and on their budget by transporting loads and/or heavy equipment from one location to another (or to a disposal facility). Below are some the projects we are thankful to have played a part in:

1. Stone for Train Tracks -- Two of our trucks responded to a train derailment in Summit Point, WV this past winter. We hauled stone in for the rebuilding of the tracks.

2. Transport of Collapsed Building Materials -- As part of t he Empire Group, we assist our sister companies when they need additional manpower and/or equipment. We assisted Empire Services in providing additional trucks in the emergency demolition of a vacant building in Reading, PA. We hauled demolition debris to a designated disposal facility, allowing for continuous demolition activity.

3. Contaminated Soil in Allentown – We hauled approximately 40,000 tons of contaminated material in Allentown to various disposal facilities.

4. Demolition Debris at Kutztown – One of our walking floors hauled construction and demolition debris at Kutztown University to be hauled away to a disposal facility.

5. Crane Parts to Assemble – We helped a local crane company haul various crane parts to be assembled on a project site.

6. Transport of heavy equipment -- We picked up a train car mover from Stuart’s Draft, VA and delivered it to a customer in Steelton, PA.

At DVC , we are thankful for being able to use our vehicles to help our customers complete their project. We could not do these projects without our skilled drivers. They take every safety precaution to help ensure a safe transport.

Drive Safely on Halloween with These Tips

Halloween will soon be upon us, and we are reminded of the dangers of driving during trick-or-treating hours (4 - 8 PM). Driving safe not only applies to cars and SUVs, but also for tractor trailers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “Halloween is consistently one of the top three days of the year for pedestrian injuries and fatalities.” This year, there will be more trucks (of various sizes) on the road this Halloween due to deliveries of online purchases. Thus, it is vital that all drivers practice these safe driving tips to protect kids on this festive night.

1. Drive Defensively – Children can easily run in out into the street, chasing after their friends, especially between parked cars. It’s important to remember that not all children will carry flashlights or wear reflective or brightly colored clothing (or costumes). So, drivers must watch for them. This also includes avoiding certain areas where there will be large gatherings of kids, such as at schools, churches, and parks.

2. Watch for “Tricks” – Halloween pranks are not confined to Mischief Night . They also occur on Halloween night. This means being on the lookout for kids throwing objects at vehicles, especially from overpasses. Objects can include pumpkins, rocks, and eggs.

3. Drunk Drivers – The theme of NHTSA’s Halloween Anti-Drunk Driving Campaign this year is “ Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving .” There will be more Halloween parties this year than last year due to the pandemic. Thus, all drivers must be alert for drunk drivers as well as report them.

4. Distracted Driving – Each Halloween, the decorations seem to get bigger and scarier. They can distract drivers, causing accidents and injuries. It also goes without saying that drivers should not be using their cell phones while driving.

No matter the route on Halloween, drivers should take their time and watch for kids. Going slower than normal through intersections should also be done, since many accidents occur in them (kids crossing them).

Why CDL Driving Schools Are Failing Drivers

The trucking industry is a vital part of America’s economy. According to a recent survey by FleetOwne r , an estimated 49 tons of freight, valued at over $53 billion, was moved in 2020. The pandemic had a big effect on truck drivers as their hours and hauls increased, all while trucking companies were dealing with a driver shortage. Moreover, driving schools are making it even harder for trucking companies to hire drivers due to the type of transmission they are teaching their students. There has been a growing shift of trucking companies switching to automatic transmission, in which driving schools are following. This is a disservice to future truck drivers. Teach ing manual transmission is still needed as many trucking companies have manual fleets (or a mixture of both transmissions).

The reason for the switch to automatic transmission has to do with how humans drive trucks. We are living in an age where computers are a major part of a vehicle (commercial and non-commercial trucks). They control gear shifting with computer-controlled actuators , which is easier on drivers and trucks. However, manual transmission gives drivers better control of the truck and provides better fuel economy. They also cost less than automatic transmissions.

Following the Trend

Yet, driving schools are too eager to follow this trend, which leaves trucking companies with manual fleets in a bind. All driving schools should teach both transmissions, giving the driver the opportunity to increase his/her driving skills (and job opportunities). Also, it would make it easier for drivers when they must change trucks, which saves time and money.

A Great Day of Golf at the 26th Annual Empire Group Golf Open

Despite missing a year due to the pandemic, the 26 ^th Annual Empire Golf Open was held on August 21, 2021, at the Willow Hollow Golf Course in Leesport, PA. It was a success with beautiful (and hot!) weather and a great turnout. The event was organized by DVC’s Russ Oswalt, and it was a family affair with Russ’s wife, Pamela, handling the catering and along with helpers Michelle Oswalt, Missy Sebio, Mandy Rotkiske, Makayla Rotkiske and Charity Oswalt. Over 100 golfers came out to have fun and get together with old friends.

The event is a favorite with Empire Group employees and their families, contractors, and customers. We even had golfers from Nashville, Tennessee and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina attend because of the appreciation they have for it! The Open began at 8 AM, lasted over four hours, and ended with a delicious buffet lunch of fried chicken, perogies, fixings for sandwiches and a variety of side dishes. There were plenty of drinks to help keep golfers hydrated with a large cooler on the course as well as at the pavilion after number 9 hole, where golfers could grab a hot dog and chips from our friendly staff. After lunch, prizes were handed out in various categories:

The Rise of Electronic Semis

As the increase of electric cars slowly rises, it seems the transition to electric buses, heavy trucks and light commercial vehicles is fast approaching. In the next couple of years, corporations like the Nikola Corp. and Tesla will be finishing up production of their versions of these electric semi-trucks.

Nikola Motor Company plans to deliver Tre battery-electric semi-trucks by next year. They are also eyeing to take orders for two fuel cell-electric models and deliver them by 2023. So far, the company has three-prototype trucks. With a 1000 horsepower engine, the company claims a mileage of 500 to 1000 miles per sitting of charge. Surprisingly, the truck is expected to take only 20 minutes to fully charge. Nikola Corp.’s trucks are the more cost-effective choice when comparing to Tesla. The trucks are estimated to cost anywhere from $60,000 to $90,000.

Tesla , who has previously released two concept electric semi-truck models in 2017, suspects their new $150,000 to $180,000 Class 8 heavy-duty truck to release this year. With hauls under 250 miles and an electric range of 300 to 500 miles the drivers can take round-trips without having to charge the vehicle again. Tesla-semis have already been pre-booked by hundreds of giant brands pushing industries to accept the “norm” of new trucking generation, helping lower the cost of fuel and decrease the damage of fuel on the environment.

Since there is usually a focus on passenger vehicles when it comes to these revolutionary vehicles, we often gloss over the fact that the U.S. freight industry consumes 2.8 million barrels of oil every day. That’s roughly equal to 1.02 billion barrels per year. 24.4% of the energy use in the U.S. is taken up by commercial vehicles and freight trucks. Fuel consumption as a whole increase yearly.

Companies are toying with the idea of switching to fully-electric-semi-trucks, not only for reasons of preserving the environment but also for cutting the costs of fuel. An average commercial truck is driven for 115,000 miles per year, and a hike of 0.50$ per gallon costs over thousands of dollars per vehicle. Imagine a trucking company with hundreds of trucks in their fleet. Even when fuel prices drop, the overall inflation is touching new peaks every year making the fuel cost for trucking industries a constant problem. Switching to electric-run trucks will eventually be the solution.

With a large fleet of trucks themselves, DVC is constantly exploring the ever-evolving options and ways to reduce their carbon footprint. One of most important practices is to always remain alert behind the wheel. This sounds easy to do, but when you are on a long haul, you are at risk for highway hypnosis. Also called while line fever since the white line can create a hypnotic effect, highway hypnosis occurs when drivers go on “autopilot” and end up at their destination without realizing how they got there. It’s a form of automaticity, where a person can perform tasks without consciously thinking about them.

During highway hypnosis, drivers aren’t aware that they have drifted over the white line, missed a turn or had a near miss with another vehicle. Aside from a trance-like state, the driver can also experience muscle stiffness or soreness, which is an indication of not moving in the seat. It can be interchangeable with drowsy driving since both can occur when a driver is tired. However, highway hypnosis can also occur when the driver is awake. Tell-tale signs of highway hypnosis include glassy eyes, loss of concentration, and daydreaming. Since the driver is not alert, reaction time is greatly reduced which can result in a collision.

Ways to Avoid Highway Hypnosis

There are a number of ways to avoid highway hypnosis:

1. Get a good night’s sleep.

2. Turn on the radio or turn up the volume.

3. Take scheduled breaks.

4. Turn down the temperature and/or let the cold air blow in your face.

5. Keep your eyes moving in all directions.

6. Take deep breaths to increase your oxygen intake – do this several times throughout the day.

7. Chew gum.

8. Read while driving – street signs, license plates and billboards.

9. Sit up straight.

Know Your Route to Avoid Bridge Strikes

Trucks hitting bridges is a constant issue, no matter where you live. In Pennsylvania, there is a news story of a truck hitting a bridge (or overpass) at least once a month. There are numerous bridges in Pennsylvania that have been damaged by trucks, from box trucks to tractor trailers. Below is a short list of bridges that have had trucks hit them or gotten stuck under them numerous times:

1. The North Oriental Covered Bridge in Snyder County – Just last month, a truck struck the bridge and knocked out most of the upper beams. The bridge was built in 1908 and carries more than 800 vehicles a day.

2. King of Prussia Road Bridge in Delaware County – In the last 11 years, the bridge has been struck 119 times. SEPTA and Amtrak trains travel the bridge that was built in 1875 and make 17,000 trips per day.

3. Main Street Bridge in Lackawanna County – Over the past three years, five trucks have struck the railroad bridge.

One way to prevent these accidents is for drivers to know their routes. Too many times, truck drivers are following their GPS and ignoring a bridge’s warning signs. These signs give the bridge’s clearance, but some may only say “low clearance.” By knowing your route, you can see where the bridges are and their height requirements. Also, it’s important to know your trucks height and weight. A truck that is 12’ in height will not be able to go under a bridge that has a clearance of 11’ 7”. Not only is there damage to the bridge, but there is also damage to the truck and the cargo. Drivers risk injury as well.

Semi Trucks & Tri-Axle Dump Trucks: Safe Stopping Distances

No matter what type of large truck you drive, safety is always a top priority. These large trucks include cement mixers, tractor trailers and dump trucks. Numerous truck accidents occur each year, and many are from trucks failing to stop in enough time to avoid plowing into the vehicle in from of them. The size and weight of the truck has a great deal to do the distance it takes to come to a complete stop. For semi trucks, information about the stopping distance (also known as braking distance) is plentiful, but what about dump trucks, namely tri-axle dump trucks? Some may put this type of dump truck in the same category as semi trucks because of their weight class (over 35,000 lbs.). However, there are differences in stopping distances between the two vehicles.

To understand the stopping distance, we must first understand the other types of distances involved with safe driving. The first is perception distance. This is the distance your truck travels from the time you see the hazard in front of you to when your brain recognizes it. The second distance is reaction. This is the amount of time it takes for you to react to the hazard by stepping on the brake. This should not be confused with stopping distance, which is the distance your truck travels from time the brakes are applied to when the truck comes to a complete stop. The safe stopping distance for a semi truck is approximately 525 feet (travel speed at 65 miles per hour and under ideal driving conditions). There are other factors that can affect stopping distance, such as road conditions and the weight of the trailer. For a tri-axle dump truck, the safe stopping distance is approximately 400 feet (travel speed 55 miles per hour and under ideal road conditions). Also, passenger cars traveling too close to a large truck can be distracting, which reduces the perception and reaction distances.

Top Five Dangerous Roads in the U.S. for Truck Drivers

Most people think a road is dangerous primarily because of the weather (e.g., flooding or snowstorms). However, there are other factors to take into consideration. While truck drivers can go through all of the safety checks before hitting the road, a sharp curve, traffic congestion or a steep highway pass can cause them to lose control of their vehicles. There are several highways in the U.S. that have earned the title of being “dangerous” and some have been compared to the “most dangerous roads” in other countries, such Bolivia’s Death Road and Karakorum Highway in China.

In the U.S., there are several roads (and every truck driver can add to this list) that are dangerous to travel. Let’s take a look at the top five dangerous U.S. roads for truckers.

1. Highway 550 Colorado – Called the “Million Dollar Highway”, this route runs from Northern New Mexico to Southern Colorado. It has been deemed dangerous because of the lack of guardrails and those traveling southbound must hug the road due to a sheer drop on one side. There is also the Uncompahgre Gorge that has very steep walls with the threat of a rockslide.

2. Dalton Highway Alaska – This highway runs through Alaska’s remote wilderness. Built primarily for truck drivers hauling supplies to the oilfield workers in Deadhorse, the road is made up of gravel and dirt. Thus, the road has areas that are slick and muddy. Also, from Coldfoot to Deadhorse, there are no services of any kind (e.g., rest stops).

3. Interstate 10 Arizona – This is another road that is mostly remote due to the desert. It connects Tucson to Phoenix, which makes it a heavily traveled road. The lack of guard rails and median barriers increase the risk of accidents. Yet, according the The Advocates , one-third of the accidents involve drunk driving.

4. Highway 2 Montana – Connecting Butte to Three Forks, this highway has a number of curves and is remote. The sparse traffic encourages drivers to exceed the speed limit. However, the main cause of fatalities is the time it takes for an ambulance to get to accident victims and take them to the hospital, which averages 80 minutes.

5. US Route 29 North Carolina – What makes this highway dangerous is the number of curves it has – 318! The twists and turns span 11 miles and are referred to as The Tail of the Dragon (or The Dragon). Also, this stretch of road is rumored to be haunted!

Six Winter Driving Hazards for Truck Drivers

Winter is here and so are the driving hazards that come with it. They can make your journey even more difficult, aside from ensuring the load arrives safety and on time. If you live in an area like we do, winter weather can change quickly with dropping temperatures and snow squalls. Or we can get a large amount of snowfall one year and none the next. If fact, the previous two winters did not produce any snow. However, this winter is making up for it. It is even more important to be proactive in keeping your truck and yourself safe in rough winter conditions. Let’s take a look at the six types of winter driving hazards you’ll encounter.

1. Wind – During a blizzard , winds can gust up to 35 miles per hour. They blow snow around to cause whiteouts and snowdrifts. High winds can also stem from Nor’Easters .

2. Black Ice – This form of ice takes drivers by surprise because it coats surfaces and is transparent, allowing the road beneath it to be visible. When black ice has been reported, it is imperative to take it slow and allow extra space between your truck and the vehicle in front of you.

3. Heavy Rain – It is not unheard of to have heavy rainstorms in winter. It can reduce visibility as well as cause hydroplaning. It is important to note that semi-trucks can hydroplane when tire treads cannot displace water on the road surface.

4. Fog – Believe it or not, fog can occur in winter when warmer air passes over colder ground. With subfreezing temperatures, fog can freeze onto surfaces making them slick.

5. Bridges – They freeze before roads because of the air around them. Cold air flows above and below bridges, allowing them to lose their heat. Thus, bridges get colder and freeze over faster than roads.

6. Snow Piles – When there is a large snowfall, roads can become narrower due to the snow piles that line one of both sides of them. These snow piles are also on street corners and medians, which may reduce visibility for cars and cause accidents.

Whether there is an inch or two feet of snow on the ground, you should always inspect your truck before starting your haul to reduce the risk of breaking down or causing an accident. Areas to inspect include tires, battery, wiper blades, lights, exhaust pipe and defrosters. It’s also advised to get up-to-the-minute weather reports to help plan alternate routes.

Almost every industry in 2020 was affected by the pandemic, including the trucking industry. There are many forecasts that predict the trucking industry will rebound in 2021, if it already hasn’t in the fourth quarter of 2020. That said, there are many recent changes to this industry. A number of them had to do with driver safety and operations. Before the pandemic, essential goods arrived on a set schedule and through the same distributors. However, online shopping remarkably changed this. Amazon and other big box stores increased the number of drivers to accommodate the shift, which now included essential goods (i.e., toilet paper) and electronics. 1. An Increase in Technology – There will be more software programs and devices to help companies improve their operations, which includes safety measures. DVC Transports Off-Spec Sunglasses

Delaware Valley Contractors (DVC) is known for transporting bulk materials and equipment to contractors and developers. However, DVC also has the capabilities to transport products, not only to the tri-state area, but to any location on the east coast. For example, DVC recently had a specialty job in Lincoln, Rhode Island and the product was sunglasses.

The sunglasses were transported to a facility that destroyed them, to prevent anyone from using them. Why destroy them? They were outdated, not in style but by year (2019). Also, no one purchased them. Did you know sunglasses have been around for a long time? Here are some fun facts about them:

1. Sunglasses were invented by the Inuit some 2,000 years ago and were made out of animal bone, leather and wood.

2. National Sunglasses Day is June 27th.

3. Polaroid lenses were invented in 1936, before then sunglasses had a tint to help reduce sun glare.

4. Ray Ban’s Wayfarer sunglasses first appeared in 1953 and are the best-selling sunglasses to date.

5. Sir Elton John is known for his unique sunglasses. It is reported that he has over 1,000 pairs.

We hauled 40 loads of the expired sunglasses in our walking floor trailer. The total weight was 800 tons. They were transported to the facility under tight security; we were escorted to the facility and the trailer was pad locked. We are going back to the facility next month to haul 2020 leftovers. This job was something we normally don’t do, but we are looking forward to more specialty jobs in 2021.

The Benefits of Using an Electronic Logging Device

Technology reaches all industries, including transportation. The trucking industry utilizes technology to not only protect drivers, but also to provide for a safe and healthy work environment. An important piece of technology in this field is an ELD (electronic logging device). According to FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration), implementing an ELD will result in:

1, 844 crashes avoided per year
562 fewer injuries per year
26 lives saved per year

ELDs have made it much easier for drivers and transportation companies to conduct business and stay in compliance.

What Is an ELD?

An ELD is small electronic device that is connected to a truck’s engine and is activated when the truck is in motion. This device was created to help ensure drivers adhere to DOT’s Hours of Service regulations , which dictate the number of driving hours per day. There are certain functions an ELD must have, such as provide data that can be transmitted to law enforcement and display a Record of Status. Just as there are many functions, there are many benefits to using an ELD:

Tracks a truck’s every three minutes – no matter where the driver is.
Helps drivers find the safest routes.
Companies can fix driver log errors quickly.
ELDs ensure drivers get the proper rest.
Drivers spend less time on paperwork and more time driving. Data cannot be manipulated as with paper logs.
Companies can monitor their drivers in real time.

Who is Subject to the ELD Rule?

Commercial drivers must follow the ELD rule if they are required to complete of duty status records. Aside from ensuring drivers stay in compliance and establishing the required documents, the ELD rule protects drivers from harassment from their managers based on ELD data. The FMCSA defines harassment as an action by a motor carrier towards a driver that the carrier knew would result in an hours-of-service violation, such as making a driver drive when tired. The ELD rule also provides for a driver to file a complaint per the Motor Carrier Act of 1984 . It is important to note that harassment only occurs if the action includes data from an ELD (or technology used in combination with an ELD).

Also, the ELD rule sets the performance standards as well as required ELDs to be registered with the FMCSA. In 2017, FMCSA mandated that all commercial carriers must be equipped with an ELD or face fines and possible service suspension.
